... or not he was actually offered to the Mets, I don't know, but the deal turned out to be Cone for Jeff Kent and Ryan Thompson. Thompson was the player the Mets hyped - a five-tool guy who could play centerfield, run like the wind, and hit for power. All true, but Thompson also struck out a lot. He never put it together and faded away after several shots with the Mets and cups of coffee...

... deal, but it’s seen entirely as his problem. Not fans, not the media, and certainly (unthinkably) Jeff Kent’s. The following all reject the Bradley deal and want DeRosa back. My advice, reread DeRosa’s blog on what it’s like to choke in two consecutive post season sweeps and rethink how indispensable he or anyone else is. There are those who would say that Bradley should look at Jackie...

After the strike-shortened season of 2002 – in which the Giants had a really good shot at postseason success if the season continued, dang it – Brian Sabean pounced on the free agent market like a big ol’ ocelot. Jeff Kent was unlikely to return, and Bill Mueller was a mediocre player with an injury history and on the wrong side of 30, so the Giants signed: A 28-year-old third baseman...

... could move back to third and a new second baseman had to be acquired. Had the Mets kept either Jeff Kent or Fernando Vina, they would have been much better off, but most baseball observers agreed that getting perennial all-star and golden glover Roberto Alomar from Cleveland was a no-brainer. Despite the fact that bringing a veteran star to the Mets inevitably backfired, the overwhelming...

ESPN reports that Randy Johnson has signed a 1 year, $8 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. Add him to Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain and that's a formidable front 3. The rest of the team, however, could use some work. Johnson is five games short of 300, and with the lineup SF will field, it might take him some time to reach the milestone. Maybe they should bring back Barry Bo and Jeff...

... to many fans, friends, and co-workers I have come to the conclusion that I want the Giants to sign Jeff Kent to be the Opening Day First Basemen for your 2009 San Francisco Giants. First thing you’re thinking is….”Not another old guy!” And you’re right…he’s 40. So he probably won’t sign a multi-year deal. In 2008, he played 121 games, hit .280 with 36 extra basehits. Is he the savior?...

The Dodgers do need a second baseman with Jeff Kent a free agent and possibly retiring, but Colletti has be consistently reluctant to deal Kemp because of his youth and potential. The Dodgers also are in no position to be dealing pitching, as they are looking to replace six free-agent pitchers, most notably Derek Lowe, Brad Penny, Greg Maddux, Joe Beimel and Chan Ho Park.

Editor's Note: This is the sixth in a series of new articles Barry will be writing on Mets second basemen for this site. - M.S. Historically, the Mets organization has not produced many major league caliber second basemen, but in the mid-'90's, it contributed no less than three. Unfortunately, the Mets didn't realize what they had and made the ill-fated trade for Carlos Baerga. Keeping Jeff...

Besides the on-going bidding for the Cubs, the major news this week is that the NL Central won’t have Bob Howry to kick around anymore. The Sun-Time’s AP subscription pays off with this report that Home Run Bob is headed to SF to fill McCovey Cove with Dodger runs. It’s good news for aging Bums like Jeff Kent with incentive-laden deals. Looking back, I’ve been a little cruel to Howry....
