Ian Craig obituary: letter

PJ Taylor writes: When I joined the parliamentary press gallery as a young reporter for Sunday Business in 1998, Ian Craig (obituary, 2 November) became a regular source of advice and was always convivial company. At the time I was the youngest member of the lobby and was very green. Ian taught me huge amounts about the customs of this most masonic of journalistic assignments. He was always...

Obituary: Ian Craig

Obituary: Ian Craig by William Leece, IanCraigIN THE knockabout world of Liverpool politics in the 1970s, the immaculately-dressed and courteous figure of Ian Craig often seemed something of an anomaly. But party leaders soon learned to under-estimate him at their peril. He was among the most tenacious of reporters, and in his writing, principally for the Liverpool Echo, ensured...

We have since covered this sad story on HoldtheFrontPage , while both the Evening News and the North-West media website How Do have also published lengthy pieces. As will be seen from those links, the tributes...

A fond farewell

An emotional day today as I travelled to North Wales to bid farewell to my former regional lobby friend and colleague Ian Craig . A sad occasion, for sure, but it was lovely to meet Ian's family and to see so many old faces from my Westminster days. The turnout at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Wrexham, which included one or two senior politicians as well as numerous Press Gallery figures past...

Leading Article: We need a crackdown

Ian Craig, the Schools Adjudicator, is a man on a mission. He wants to get the message out to parents that lying to secure a place for your child in a popular school is wicked. It is a form of "theft", he says, because it deprives another child of a place, and we should be saying wherever we can that this is not right.

Flipping Ed Balls MP

Here’s a thought… A few days ago Ian Craig, the chief schools adjudicator, recommended a range of new penalties to be introduced to punish parents who break school admissions rules by giving false addresses, fibbing about their ‘real’ address and moving house just to personally gain from the postcode. Fair enough, I can understand that. But who [...]

Crackdown on school place cheats

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8334503.stm Tougher action should be taken against the thousands of parents who lie to get their children into popular schools, England’s school places watchdog says. Schools Adjudicator Ian Craig said an estimated 3,500 parents lied on school application forms each year. Local authorities should use all means open to them to deter parents from cheating...

Letters: Lottery winner

We welcome chief schools adjudicator Ian Craig's report endorsing this council's use of random allocation as a fair way to deal with oversubscribed school places ( Watchdog's report , 3 November). Our previous system of using home-to-school distance as the tie-breaker was very unpopular because the geographical spread of our secondary schools meant parents in whole areas of the city were unable...

School places: Admissions of guilt

Ministers want to make the great schools game harder to play FAKING divorce, claiming to live in a shop, passing off a grandparent’s house as one’s own: not more revelations of MPs’ accounting tricks, but tactics used by parents to get their children into oversubscribed state schools. A report on the subject published on November 2nd listed all these and more. In it Ian Craig,...
