In the world of sports labor, the battle has always been painted as being management against union. But, the cold hard truth is, the internal battles are the ones that weaken one side or the other and give rise to advantage. So, I’m not so sure Gary Bettman is smiling today, but I’m certain the NHL’s [...]

via Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, If Wayne Gretzky, the single greatest attraction in hockey history, chooses to pass on tomorrow night’s Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony, what an embarrassment that will be for NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and his fellow owners. And what an indictment of the damage remaining from the attempt to salvage the Phoenix Coyotes. The very fact...

... who breaks the South's crap shutout is the Islanders who play in the NHL's worst arena, as said by Gary Bettman himself, play in a relatively small market#, and they've been atrocious for as long as I can remember. Meanwhile the lowest ranked Canadian team is Edmonton at 18. Edmonton has sold out their arena every game the past three years, they simply have a smaller arena than other...

... enterprise. Brunt doesn't just argue that Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles paved the way for Gary Bettman's disastrous expansion of the league, he suggests that Wayne Gretzky's best interests (and no-one guards those interests like father and son) have lead to inevitable catastrophe for the league. Although I've followed Brunt as a columnist, I hadn't yet read any of his books. As a...

from Damien Cox of the Spin at the Toronto Star, First, it sure looks like this team is moving somewhere at the end of the season. When the NHL governors convene in December, Gary Bettman will deliver a status report on trying to find local buyers, and this time around the questions are going to be tougher when he tries the “all is well” speech. Second, any sex appeal this...

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail, Publicly, the NHL’s position – on the rare occasions when commissioner Gary Bettman will discuss the NHLPA’s trials and tribulations – is that the league believes a strong union is good for business. Deep down, it is hard to imagine they truly believe that. Otherwise, would they have not have discouraged Sens owner Eugene...

... has the NHL failed so much than trying to create a rivalry between Columbus and Detroit. That Gary Bettman I tell ya….he’s a genius. Forget the Red Wings playing a natural rival like Toronto….let’s play Columbus and Nashville. Exciting for the fans. (this message was brought to you by an angry Wings fan)

The Senators whipped into the Sunshine state for two games last week and one thing was horribly obvious. The NHL doesn't work in Florida. Attendance was announced at 12,596 for the Panthers game and 13,213 for the Lightning game. Try 7,000. Maybe. Apathy also reigns in Phoenix, Atlanta and Nashville. The NHL can skew attendance figures all they want, the fact is Gary Bettman made a mistake....
