The Red Wings today recalled forward Darren Helm from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League and assigned forward Darren McCarty to the Griffins. The Red Wings also assigned forward Randall Gelech from Grand Rapids to Rochester (AHL). Helm is currently second on the Griffins roster in scoring with 18 points in 16 games (5-13--18).

That Darren Helm belongs in the NHL is undoubted: He has the speed that's so valuable in today's game, and he's an absolute puck hound to boot. The Red Wings called up their coveted prospect to play Wednesday against Montreal precisely because they felt a need for a shot in the arm after spending the previous week playing in western Canada.
