Taking Stock

... (they didn’t) but because the vibes were nice, unhurried and relaxed. Too bad we had to leave for Cusco the next morning. One thing I do prefer in Lima over the Andes is the food I’ve had. All the fresh seafood here is incredible. They mix with Asian and colonial influences to make a cuisine that really rocks. I’ll miss ceviche in London, that’s for sure. Yeah, you could conceivably make...

We saw Machu Picchu

... recommend buying tickets beforehand on Perurail.com. We took the very scenic 4 hour ride from Cusco to Aguas Calientes and hunted down a hostel to stay the night. With a few new Spanish words, we found a place with hot water for relatively cheap. Unbeknownst to us until later that night, the water was also coming from the ceiling. Several drips fell down the entire night, flooding our bed...

The grownup gapper: Over and out

... does tend to wear one’s patience. Luckily, my itinerary has also allowed me to meet the locals. In Cusco, Peru, I lived with a host family for six weeks while studying Spanish and working as a volunteer in a poverty-stricken primary school. In Ecuador's Galapagos Islands I taught English and helped out at the Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre. And in New Zealand I spent a month on a conservation...

Service con los ninos

... women in Peru, I guess projects like that are rare. In this area - the outskirts of high up of Cusco the children have no primary school. I asked if there were laws demanding school - and there are they are just not enforced. We arrived and were given a tour - we were not 100% certain what we should be doing. Some started helping teach english - I learned quickly I was not good at that....

Ridiculous prices of airfare

... Lima, Peru. I’ll crash in the airport that night and get a very early flight to the Peruvian city Cusco. I’ll spend a few days exploring there and getting accustomed to the 10,000 elevation before pressing on to see Maccu Picchu for a few days. Then i think i’ll be meeting up with Levy in either Lima or Guayaquil, Ecuador. We’ll spend a week or two working up the coast of Peru and Ecuador....
