A Movie A Day: PAYDAY (1973) If I was a man I’d ball you, too. God knows you’re easy enough.

Final Thoughts: What we have here is a great lead performance left in the hands of people who didn’t know how to capitalize on it. Unlike in Duke’s THE SILENT PARTNER, he doesn’t have a great Curtis Hanson script to build on and we’re left with a good performance in a sloppily made movie that doesn’t seem to go anyplace. Now, I’m sure if I saw this movie at another point in my life or when I was in...

Feature: DVD Reviews for 12/19: Daphna, You Might Want To Skip This One!

by Peter SobczynskiThe long-awaited debut of one of Hollywood’s most talked-about but little-seen dogs is the big news on the DVD front this week--not surprising when the competition consists of direct-to video cartoon sequels, another helping of shape-shifting robots and what is arguably one of the worst movie musicals ever made.In 1981, director Sam Fuller, the creator of such pugnacious and powerful...

White Dog (Fuller, 1982)

Samuel Fuller’s White Dog is Criterion’s recent endeavor to rescue an otherwise worthy film from relative anonymity. Few have had the opportunity to see Fuller’s tense drama until now. Outside of video boot owners, past audiences include those of a few feature runs overseas, a 1991 New York theater screening, and the handful [...]

Notes on Sam Fuller's White Dog.

Random thoughts stream of consciousness style about Sam Fuller's WHITE DOG, which is finally out in a legitimate DVD release, and from Criterion no less. I've only seen this years ago in a horribly muddy VHS bootley, so seeing it...

White Dog

Reviewer: Erin Donovan Rating (out of 5): ****½ One of the most famous unknown films of all time finally comes out of the shadows of bootleggery and gets the Criterion treatment. Samuel Fuller's White Dog, a story about the...

White Dog

How does a filmmaker approach the theme of racism? Samuel Fuller uses both carefully placed metaphors and overt bluntness in 1982’s White Dog, and for the latter, he was punished. Because Fuller approached the topic so directly (as he did in 1959’s The Crimson Kimono and ‘63’s Shock Corridor), few viewers could have misconstrued his intentions. Unfortunately, these few viewers were all members of the...

Blu-ray Review: L.A. Confidential

DVD’s I Bought This Week: September 23rd [DVD Weekly]

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they ...
