... brigade thru the DH slot. The near term future seems like the end of the Halo road for Angels 3B Chone Figgins . He could play outfield... but with over $30 million committed there on three guys already in their 30s, and with a league-minimum Brandon Wood bat ready to power the lineup from the hot corner for LA of Anaheim in 2010... this looks like the door is slammed shut on the...

... winds up. It will certainly be interesting to see how Amaro approaches the hot corner situation; Chone Figgins, Adrian Beltre, and Mark DeRosa are among the available free agents; Alex Gordon and Brandon Wood could be available by trade; and on the low end of things, Garrett Atkins is likely to be non-tendered by the Rockies.

Derrick Goold expects the Cubs will offer Mark DeRosa a free agent contract. DeRosa, coming off wrist surgery, figures to field an offer from the Chicago Cubs, at the least. He and Chone Figgins are two of the best utility players in the game, and both are free agents. This isn’t exactly predicting something wild. After all, it would be the single most shocking event in Cubs history...

... but I doubt that happens in the wake of the Blum re-signing. If we really wanted to go for it: Chone Figgins (probably a multi-year deal with at least $7-8 million on the table each year). Sign LaTroy Hawkins back to have a strong depth for the likely closer by committee situation I can feel building. There are a few former closers who carry the label to which I'm sure Ed Wade is...

... to no one. He's not exactly an injudicious hacker or anything, but he's a free swinger, and both Chone Figgins and Adam Dunn drew more unintentional walks in 2009 than Lopez has drawn since 2004. Plate discipline doesn't usually change very much over a player's career, at least not until he gets old. You'll see some guys make incremental improvements and other guys lose their feel,...

The Boston Globe floated this theory yesterday: If the Yankees don’t bring Johnny Damon back, the White Sox look like a good fit. They need a leadoff hitter, and while they’d love to sign free agent Chone Figgins and move him to the outfield, he may get too pricy. While Damon has been a No. 2 [...]

... defensive performance as fifth-best in all of baseball (behind Evan Longoria , Ryan Zimmerman , Chone Figgins and Adrian Beltre ) in terms of fielding runs above avearge. He also tallied the highest UZR/150 total among third basemen with more than 700 innings in the field. Long story short? Crede plays some wicked defense. Arguably better than any third baseman on the free agent market....
