The first programming language I ever used was a version of BASIC on the BBC Microcomputer (over 20 years ago and counting). It did use line numbers, but had procedures and subroutines and allowed you to do structured programming including recursion. Having a programming language built into the machine made it incredibly simple to start hacking - and it even included an assembler so you could embed...

I'm looking for a compiler or interpreter for a language with basic math support and File IO which can be executed directly from a memorystick in either Linux or Windows. Built in functionality for basic datastructures and sorting/searching would be a plus. (I've read about movable python, but it only supports windows) Thank you

First: * I know what pointers are! * , But, I'm looking for a really good definition of them, one that is concise, simple, easy to understand, a "aha definition" something that will make someone with basic or more grasp of programming understand what pointers are. I know pointers are generally hard to explain that's why I've asked this question, as it seems a pretty hard task for me to explain pointers...

I have been working with PHP for a while now and would like to learn some Windows desktop-based GUI applications. Something similar to C# or Visual Basic would be nice, however I would like to learn a language that is open, similar to PHP. Please do not suggest anything that requires an expensive compiler or one that does not allow you to create stand-alone applications.

Java (Or any other language) Hello. I'm re-firing this question with a twist. When we start to learn a new programming language, we always want to know how to perform some basic operations we already know in our base programming language. Sometime it takes a little while because we just don't know where to start, so I propose the following code challenge : Create a basic application that: Shows a...

I am looking for a program to make mockup screenshots with. I first found out I could do it with Visual Basic (uglier names I have yet to hear a programming language being called) from joelonsoftware.com . I don't want to start learning VB now, especially since I am still in the process of learning Java. I then found mockupscreens.com , with the searchstring "how to make mockup screenshots". But seeing...
