I finished up The Almost Moon , Alice Sebold's second novel, this morning. Having read most of this book in a fluish fever, I'm not really sure what to write. Overall? I'd say that the story remains utterly unconvincing from start to finish because I didn't sympathize in any way with main character, Helen Knightly. The novel starts off with a very strong first sentence: "When all is said and done,...

Brian Eno will provide an original score for Peter Jackson's adaptation of the bestselling novel, The Lovely Bones. The talented and legendary musician/producer doesn't score many films, but he should. From The Playlist article about the announcement: Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" takes place, or part of it at least, in heaven, so who better to provide that blissful and...

The Almost Moon By Alice Sebold Publisher: Picador Published: 2007 ISBN-13: 9780330451376 291 pages Page 133: "Mom's different, right?" I asked. […] "I like to think that your mother is almost whole," he said. "So much in life is about almosts, not quites." "Like the moon," I said. There it hung, a thin slice still low in the sky. "Right," he said. "The moon is whole all the time, but we can't always...

The Lovely Bones A Novel by Alice Sebold (c) 2002 Publisher: Back Bay Books Pages: 352 In preparing to write my own review of The Lovely Bones, I went looking online for reminders of the character's names and plot events etc because it's been weeks since I finished the novel and I've read several more since then. I noticed a pattern in that the ones most likely to appear in 'respectable' publications...

The Almost Moon , by Alice Sebold having deeply enjoyed this author’s book the lovely bones, i was looking forward to diving into this book. and, while i did finish the book, and did find things about it that were worthwhile, i had a hard time. it’s just such a completely depressing story! holy cow. it’s interesting: i read this book just after finishing howard dully’s non-fiction autobiography, my...

The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold Literature This is a very troubling book. It all takes place in the span of 24 hours after Helen murders her mother. Helen's mother, Clair is mentally ill and very demanding on her daughter. She also suffers from agoraphobia, the fear of leaving your own home. When a neighbour calls Helen to tell her that her mother does not even recognize her, Helen goes over to find...

This is an odd one. I read The Lovely Bones last year and absolutely loved it. The Almost Moon however, I’m not completely sure about. The subject is similarly difficult and thought provoking, but somehow it doesn’t have the soul of The Lovely Bones. The story opens with the narrator - Helen Knightly, a middle aged [...]

Book: The Almost Moon Author: Alice Sebold Review: This was an interesting read. The book takes place within twenty-four hours, if you don't count the lifetime of flashbacks. The main character, Helen, is called to her mother's house by her neighbor. Her Mother has been housebound for years, it is later revealed that she was agoraphobic. Helen's mother is obviously going downhill, and when it becomes...

... an interview with crime fiction writer Sophie Hannah. ... a review of Alice Sebold's new book The Almost Moon. (The reviewer is not impressed. I haven't read the book myself, but I wasn't impressed by the reading and Q&A session that Sebold gave at the Barnes & Noble Union Square store in New York last October. I was in the audience, and thought her answers weren't particularly elaborate or very...

We shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but for the hardback book I'll make an exception. Overhyped, overpriced and now, thank heaven, oh so over. Picador, purveyors of fine fiction from Alan Hollinghurst, Graham Swift, Helen Fielding and Alice Sebold, have announced the end of this “moribund format” from next year.
