GQ Magazine has named Chicago its 2008 City of the Year , concentrating on four different categories: Film ( Batman , check); Literature ( Aleksandar Hemon , check); Architecture ( Spire , um...); and Politics ( Mayor Daley? Seriously). Okay, so maybe we have a few issues with some of the things they picked. Hizzonah is not exactly high on our happy-with list right now . Still, what with Obama's election...

Most of it is along the lines of Aleksandar Hemon's "everything he and his flunkeys touched instantly turned into long-lasting shit", but really, what else can you say about this eight-year-disaster...

By any measure, Aleksandar Hemon is a phenomenally successful writer. But his literary reputation is all the more impressive when you consider that it is entirely founded on the writing he has done in English – a language the native Bosnian scarcely knew before landing in Chicago in 1992.

Reginald Gibbons, a professor at Northwestern University , was nominated for his collection of poems, Creatures of a Day (Louisiana State University Press). Patricia Smith (yes, that Patricia...

Of all the things that popped into our inbox last night while we waited for the debate to start, perhaps this was the one that made us most excited: Chicago's Aleksandar Hemon has been nominated for a National Book Award (fiction) for his recent novel The Lazarus Project . Now's a good a time as any to check our interview with him from this spring. Hemon's work has been published in The New Yorker,...
