Service chiefs are normally fearful of being allied to a particular political party. There were some raised eyebrows among the military when Admiral Sir Alan West, a redoubtable First Sea Lord, accepted a peerage on retirement and entered the Labour Government as Security Minister at the Home Office, where he still resides.
