Many are writing about the MSM's irrational obsession with tearing down Sarah Palin. Irrational ... obsession. Are they afraid of a self-confident, strong woman who gets things done? Donald Douglas at American Power blogs about Gov. Palin's background as described in her new book, Going Rogue: An American Life": With Palin we have our modern-day political scribe of the frontier existence, the...

Cool weather, crisp, clean air, colourful leaves; autumn is prime hiking season here in Japan with lots of great destinations to choose from. Unfortunately a few hundred thousand other people in Tokyo think so too, and will be joining you on your weekend of 'getting away from it all'. Last day in Edinburgh today and I only have to achieve the simple aim of not eating chips. That's my main target, as last night, I again fell foul to the 2am chips and cheese danger mix. Its some sort of subconscious need that after a really good gig, I have to ruin it all by slowly destroying my heart by ever increasing cholesterol levels. The entire day pre-gig was fairly healthy, with the possible...

England and Gloucester rugby player Andy Hazell lists his top tips for his home county Gloucester Guildhall This cracking small live music venue is one of the town's best kept secrets. The management seem to have the knack of discovering big bands early and persuading bigger names to play to no more than a few hundred people. Over the years they've had Radiohead, Muse and Primal Scream, among others....

I am a little out of the swing of the news. I returned yesterday from Schenectady in upstate New York, from the weekend wedding of my cousin Reggie's daughter, Vanessa. The last time I was in Schenectady was four years ago when my son played his last lacrosse game against Union College. His team lost that day and it rained. This was a happier occasion. It's beautiful country up there, even if the...

By John Knight Cool groomsmen gifts, this group of three words are the keywords you have to keep in mind when thinking of what gifts give to groomsmen, cool gets emphasis. It is quite easy to please men when it comes to gifts. It does not have to be expensive. If it is sleek-looking and functional and free, men will appreciate it. It gives them the feeling that you are doing them a favor. It makes...

I started the process of buying a new pair of hiking trousers today from Hilltrek , the local outdoor manufacturer and retailer in Aboyne. The specific trouser is the Cabrach Ventile® Trousers - Double - Made to Measure . My last pair were purchased from Hilltrek but they were not made to measure, but after years spent in the hills walking to free skiing they have seen better days. I am a big fan...

A 14 year-old boy from Swansea has become the latest person to fall whilst walking on Constitution Hill in Aberystwyth. Thankfully he escaped unhurt after plunging 100 feet and landing on a ledge. I first called for a review of safety on these cliffs in January 2005 after two separate incidents caused concern. I have renewed my call on a regular basis, the latest being in September this year following...

Day two of the Showdown in Chicago , a three-day-long protest against big banks, began a bit dismally for 'The Nation'. An email from American Bankers Association spokesman John Hall informed us that our press credentials had been revoked. The reason? Because we'd arrived early to cover a protest outside the ABA's annual meeting at the Sheraton Hotel the night before, he told us, ABA officials believed...

This past weekend my dad turned 60. We have started a tradition of getting together for Grandpa Bill's birthday to walk among the woods and fields of Southern Wisconsin while enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of fall. As you can see from the photo above, we have not quite reached our peak fall colors yet, though there are a couple hints of what's yet to come. Here in the southern part of the...

There has been a bit of a mention about TA cutbacks about the place, and since the Times has mentioned it , I figured it's in the public domain. Here's my answer to James Cleverly's question. It's true. Man Training Days (the number of days you are allowed to be paid for) has been cut from essentially unlimited to just 50 in my unit. Last year I did over 80 days. (Admittedly 16 of those were skiing)....

I was walking down from Croft Ambrey towards Croft Castle recently and happened upon a time when the poetic side of my brain seemed to awake from deep dormancy to intense creativity. Every part of the landscape seemed to speak to me and I responded with my voice in words that flowed with ease and freedom. I was reluctant to stop and try and write everything down as it would spoil the presence on the...
