Last week, with Lebron visiting, I wandered down to the Verizon Center area to feed off some of the energy. There was no need to go to the game itself, though it was a good one, up there in the corner of an Irish pub. The neighborhood itself is an astonishing development: Whether you call it Chinatown, or Gallery Place, it's Washington's answer to Times Square, a place that throbs with energy on almost...

Here’s something weird that has been happening for me, and I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or the luck of the Irish Pub or what, but….. EVERY time I’ve gone to this central Virginia fan’s Giants Meetup at Finn McCool’s Irish Pub – the Giants win. Every. Single. Time. It’s gotten me pretty shaken at this [...]

On seeing these my first thought was that there must be an Irish pub nearby and yes there was. I passed it by as I had better things to do then have a discussion on the Ireland-France football game. Maybe next time.

Beer is the third-most-consumed liquid in the world (after water and tea), but not long ago it was still surprisingly hard to find a decent beer bar in Los Angeles. No, not an ultra lounge cordoned off by velvet ropes and cologne-soaked bouncers or a high-end speakeasy specializing in retro cocktails. A bar. One [...]

I'm just stumbling over beer news in my normal news perusal, so here, look over mu shoulder: BBC News: the seemingly weekly news of booze being healthy : "Drinking alcohol every day cuts the risk of heart disease in men by more than a third, a major study suggests. The Spanish research involving more than 15,500 men and 26,000 women found large quantities of alcohol could be even more beneficial...

Mom wanted show us the new casino that was built in an old steel mill in Bethlehem PA. It was very busy for a Thursday afternoon. Mom played the penny slots and broke even. We also had a few beers and an Irish wiskey in the Irish pub in the casino. It was a nice relaxing afternoon. Now we're on our way to the Oyster House in Milford for dinner. I can’t help thinking that Chris Maclean is looking at the pub trade through rose-tinted spectacles when he says he thinks the worst is now over and there are great opportunities out there. He is entirely right, of course, about the vicious circle of decline – falling trade leading to shorter opening hours, reduced facilities and lower standards of service and cleanliness. But putting all...

I'm going to be in Portland, Oregon this Friday. At 10:30 I'll be on a panel at the Supercomputing 2009 conference with folks from Intel, NVidia, AMD, Dreamworks and Contra Costa College talking about preparing developers for new parallel programming paradigms. At 3pm, I'll be at Kells Irish Pub in the Pearl District for a Pixel Bender tweetup. Portland Pixel Bender Developers (or interested folk),...

And so we went to Wales. We headed along the North Wales coast road to the City of Bangor which is about a two and a half hour drive away from where we live in Yorkshire. Bangor stands proud keeping watch over the Menai Straights and the island of Anglesey in the north-west corner of Wales. It is an ancient city and home to a thriving university. It is also home to a thriving branch our family. It...

He is sitting on his high bar stool, supping. Reading his newspaper that he has folded in half, drinking his half pint of beer. He looks the most self-assured man in the world, because he doesn't need anyone, or anything. And he's just about arrogant enough to believe it. Years ago, he made a choice when she left, he chose to not rely on anyone. He decided he would be fine with it. And he was. He came...
