High Tea

Yesterday we celebrated Miss Seven's impending birthday with "High Tea". I've been collecting proper bone china tea cups from Op-shops for a few weeks, and we set the table with the 'good' damask table cloth & napkins and got out the cut-glass platters. Then we loaded up the table with home-baked goodies, made by myself, my Mum and my sister - who made the most awesomely cute cupcakes...

Some Poetick Autobiography

1. EVERYTHING can't be Kafkaesque, can it? I ask myself this over and over, even though I know it's a rhetorical question. 2. I read today my state (Pennsylvania) is collapsing. I have long believed this, as I have noticed numerous cracks in the pavement, divots in the asphalt, odd leans to both houses and people, and when I step forward my foot falls alls by itself and seems to take longer each time...

Vintage Singer Sewing Machines

Whilst visiting my bloggy pals these last few weeks i found that Lucy and Rachel have both recently become the proud owners of vintage Singer sewing machines. Lucy's was a very thoughtful gift from her Father-in-Law and Rachel's belonged to her Nana. Seeing these machines bought back great memories as my Mum had one which was given to her by her Mother-in-Law and it's the machine i learnt to sew on....

Singer Sewing Table Restoration: Part I

Apologies for the blurry photo - there's not much room or light in the tool shed and this was the best of many! Also, there's not a missing drawer - I had just removed it to see it in the light better. This Singer sewing machine table has been sitting in my grandparents' tool shed for many, many years. It was given to my grandmother by her mother on the occasion of her marriage to my grandfather. Not...

Old Singer Sewing Machine - by Max Richards

This snap of an old black one is handsome, but Mother's was prettier, with flowers -my hands touched her feet working the treadledriving the big lower wheel turningwith its loop, a thin strip of leather, sending its turning up to the small wheel.Singer, I'd say to myself, while the musicalhum of it speeded up then slowed. The shiny flat rectangle the needle entered, that slid open and shut - under

What a little beauty!

**OK, so I warned you that an image-heavy post was coming LOL. Forgive the quality of the images though, it's been overcast here the last few days and the light is pretty awful.** Anyway, as I mentioned the other day, I finally managed to snag Miss Seven's birthday present on eBay. Hubby picked it up for me on Wednesday night and I'm so thrilled with it! See, I've been looking to buy her a very simple...

Good Times Remembered . . .

My thoughts often take me back to idyllic days spent in Rhodesia under the blazing African sun, and the manner in which I changed countries without moving as Rhodesia became firstly Zimbabwe-Rhodesia and then finally Zimbabwe. I lived in Salisbury, now known as Harare, and the first few years were spent in the Avenues, an area always awash with the colour of Jacaranda or Flame trees. Weekend trips...

Antique Alley

I've set up another shop - just for three months - it's local. Antique Alley is a well-known haunt to locals. A friend and I decided to open a space in the old movie theatre - The Rialto - in West Monroe. The Rialto Antique Market is filled to the brim - both upstairs and downstairs. And it has a most delightful sandwich shop upstairs to give a fatigued shopper a break. Friend Karla collects those...

Installments: what businessmen called micro-loans a hundred years ago

TECHNOLOGY: "Nokia to Offer Phone Installments in India," by R. Jai Krishna, Wall Street Journal, 20 August 2009. Radical stuff: how to sell an expensive bit of technology to someone on the frontier? Way back when, Singer sewing machine...

A Look at the Franchise Business Model

singing for my supper?

I have bought an old Singer treadle machine from a man in Tisbury. I've always wanted one and was inspired to scour ebay having read about John-Paul Flintoff's book 'Through the eye of a needle' in last week's Sunday newspapers. The book (which is also on order) talks about his efforts to make his own clothes and the impending demise of oil supplies. It also talks about the importance of making, not...

Handbag Inspiration

Inspired by the handbag we had just raffled off, I decided I wanted to sew another one of my own, so I dusted off my old Miss Singer sewing machine and have been taking her for a whirl. I had all of the fabric already in my stash and a few weeks ago had found a set of three hand embroidered doilies in a charity shop in Broadstairs. That's what you see as the babushka's tummy. I think the whole purse...

Nostalgia

A very lazy start to today, finally getting dressed around 11.30am I proceeded to start the mammoth job of cleaning out the piggies. I've managed to do over half, but had to stop as I both ran out of newspaper and had to go to a dentist appointment. I was in for a treat though after the dentist as I found a 'new' charity shop. Even better than a boot sale for prices! I bought a lovely array of pillowcases...
