In his most recent best-selling book, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto, journalist Michael Pollan argues that nutritionism a nutrient-by-nutrient approach to eating has harmed our health and our environment. Yes, America produces a cornucopia of food, but the bulk of it turns out to be overly processed, high in calories and loaded with fat and sodium. After a sold-out...

I’m delighted to report that although we’re in the midst of a massive recession I’ve had an amazing year for business – I think, my best to date. Although this is gratifying, it’s also worn me out so I headed off wearily on my annual pilgrimage to Tenerife. I got back a couple of days ago and I must say it didn’t disappoint. I know Tenerife has a horrid reputation...

We've got this Buffy the Vampire Slayer poster at home (you can click on it to see it bigger), and it's funny, before we bought it, it looked perfectly fine.. but when you have a closer look, there are at least 4 really weird things about it, and probably more that haven't spotted yet too! Unbelievable for an official poster.. it's like one of those "What's wrong with this picture?" things...

"Pay it Forward" is a fun game, and when there is fun, of course I am in! If you would like to participate in Pay It Forward, just leave a comment on this post. The first three people to leave a comment will be my next Pay It Forward recipients. You must have a blog so I can read your postings and learn a little about you. That way, I will know what to gather just for you! THEN, when you...

There are so many exquisite gardens beginning with "H" that I can't fit them into one entry, so I'm concentrating on members of the Historic Houses Association today, because you won't get finer architecture than this and the gardens are spectacular too! If, like me, you are interested in visiting gardens, this is a wonderful organisation to join - you pay an annual fee and you can visit...

Garden designer, writer, teacher and lecturer The landscape architect Anthony du Gard Pasley, who has died aged 80, was a skilled and highly respected, yet largely unnoted, designer responsible for the creation of many large private gardens in Britain, Switzerland, southern France and other parts of Europe. Sometimes I am stopped in my tracks when I’m travelling around, by examples of really good garden design and maintenance. Last month I was struck by the simple beauty of this tiny front garden – less than a yard wide and fronting onto a fairly busy village street, the owners have managed to create a perfect cottage garden feel despite the constrained space and the difficulties of location...

Long-term readers may recall my 2004 CSS Zen Garden design, GeoCities 1996. Now Yahoo! has pulled the plug on the GeoCities domain and all the sites hosted there, I’ve written a short article for ZDNet GeoCities once seemed to occupy an unassailable position on the web, so its recent demise contains important lessons about the nature of [...]

Instead of joining an evening class this Autumn, I've joined the University of Bath Gardening Club. I'm unsure of the exact connection with University - apart from us meeting there - it's certainly not the reserved domain of dons or students and everyone's most welcome. The programme of speakers is put together by Derry Watkins of Special Plants , so the standard is extremely high. Fergus Garrett treated...
