When my love swears that she is made of truth

We combined holidays this year for part of the family ... Dinner on Thursday, then on Friday we had wonderful company, followed by our Christmas Eve, because Daughter is going overseas with her Young Man for the winter break. I put a ladder against one of the fir trees in the front yard, and climbed up with the large loppers and took the end off one of the branches -- about a six foot piece -- to use...

Plant ID 10 - Podocarpus polystachyus

Another mouthful of ..... what i name. Sometimes it's easier to rem the common name. Unfortunately, common names are not recognised world wide. So... we have to work harder on the scientific name. The common name for Podocarpus polystachyus is The Sea Teak. Outside Singapore, the tree is common enough to be a commercial softwood timber source. The timber is called Podo Wood after its generic name,...

Artistic Foundations of Bonsai Design: WebBook by Andy Rutledge

This distinctive Japanese red pine appears in Andy Rutledge’s web book ‘Artistic Foundations of Bonsai Design.’ The original image (left) came from a back issue of Bonsai Today magazine. The black lines on the right hand image were drawn by Andy to illustrate how “the smooth but erratic curves of the trunk are carried over [...]

hornbeam # 12

This is a European hornbeam, Carpinus betulus. It was collected in Germany by Wolfgang Kaeflein in 1994. I got it in 1996 as stump with no branches. When I brought it home the guy who was my assistant at that time said in all earnest 'this will never ever become a decent bonsai'. Well, just to prove him wrong I planted it into my growing field and let the top grow freely to thicken the ridiculously...

linden styling

This is a linden, Tilia platiphyllos. It was collected in Germany by Wolfgang Kaeflein in 2001. David acquired it and started to work on ti. I inherited it in a trade this summer. Normally I work on such material from March to May. But we are having the warmest November ever with spring-like temperatures. And I can work outside. So I gabe it a go because linden are some of the most hardy deciduous...

Hydrangea bonsai?

I know that hydrangeas are known for huge, showy flowers that probably won't be conducive to good bonsai design, and most hydrangeas have large leaves, etc. that just make them undesirable. The other day, though, I saw some beautiful shrubs for sale half off at the local Home Depot. Turned out they were hydrangea paniculata with leaves about an inch long. They are in 3 gallon nursery pots, and have...

The Future of Bonsai

Well, the immediate future anyway! I purchased some seedlings from Matt Ouwinga ( kaedebonsai.com ) and couldn't be happier. He always sends more than you pay for and gives price breaks for larger orders (although his prices are great anyway!) I hope to have some of these ready to start selling in about 5 years or so.

Choisya Bonsai

This small pot containing an even smaller Choisya ternata is growing happily in our front room. New leaves of light green are almost translucent and provide clean foliage. The leaves when crushed give off a very pleasant scent. This plant was one of many grown from cuttings the siblings are now in the garden. Also [...]

Present trend is to say it with potted plants

BANGALORE: There’s happiness in giving. But giving somebody a gift involves choices on what to buy, where to buy and how to pack it. The paradigm has just got redefined with a tinge of personalization. Plants — ornamental or flowering, indoor or outdoor and ordinary or bonsai — are becoming preferred items in the corporate and personal gifting space. As living and growing gifts, they...

Three New Books (Just in Time)

Some of you still read books. We know because we sell them. If you fall into this illustrious (if somewhat aging) group, good times await you. Take a look. Pocket Guide to Bamboos by Ted Jordan Meredith Really nothing about bonsai here, but our guess is some bonsai enthusiast somewhere also appreciates bamboo. And there’s nothing that [...]
