Currant, violet and mineral aromas follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a tight finish. Solid and tightly strung. A lovely new wine. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Best after 2011. 1,650 cases made.

Cabernet franc (cab-er-nay frahnk); red What it is: The third most important of the Bordeaux grapes, behind cabernet sauvignon and merlot, it's one of the wine world's unsung reds. A genetic parent of cabernet sauvignon (the other is sauvignon blanc), it's most often found in Bordeaux or Meritage blends.

McLaren Vale and Fleurieu, South Australia. Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Petit verdot and Cabernet franc. 14.5%. Cork. Source: Cellar. One of the pleasing things about wine blogging, is the people you come to know. Joe is one such individual. He lives somewhere on the opposite side of the globe and he is a very talented wine blogger with a deep passion for d'Arenberg .* After a hard day in the sun,...

Could there be anything more French than a fine Bordeaux wine? A Graves Rouge for example, made from cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes grown on vines planted on a south-facing slope on the left bank of the Garonne river. As it turns out, there could. Although the wine made at Chateau du Seuil is typical of the region, with its complex fruit flavours and nicely integrated oak and tannins, its makers...

(2002 depicted) Nose: big round soft berries and poached brandied bear smells (really!) Unique for Merlot but interesting. Oaky vanilla. Palate: huge rich core of peppery cedar. Well balanced with prominent acid and very soft tannins. Finish: vanilla and cherry. Overall: an elegant and subtle Merlot. Unpretentious when decanted and soft on the palate with simple yet elegant flavors. --A Review from...

Wine: Bear’s Lair Viognier 2007 and Merlot 2006. Both $3.99 at Trader Joe’s. Two of the best wines at this price anywhere. They have trouble keeping the mineral-y, crisp Viognier on the shelves at TJ’s as word spreads. Look for the same thing to start happening with the velvety Merlot. Over the last several days I've tasted four wines sporting 14.8% or so alcohol. They were two pinots, a merlot and a sangiovese all from the West Coast. It just doesn't work. These wines burn. Wines for the table that push or exceed 15% alcohol just don't cut it. They're out of balance and they give that burning tingle on the palate that works great with whiskey, but destroys wine. I know people love...

The wine was Norte Chico Merlot from Chile in 2007, and a decent 13 percent. It was, characteristically, mostly plummy, and went very well with all the food, which were served in sensibly-sized portions, which I always prefer to feeling under-fed or certainly over-stuffed. I started with smoked venison, which came on a light bed [...]

California, USA. Cabernet sauvigonon 51%, Merlot 47%, the balance being Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. 13% alcohol. Cork. Approx $A 60. Cabernet can be clunky and monolithic, this was pleasingly pure and refined. A beautiful wine, with lovely proportions, balance and length. With ripe blackcurrant on the nose and in the mouth, this is soft and silken to start before a thread of creamy vanilla and...
