This was the brainchild of Andrew Hall (oinosnervosa.com) as an adjunct to the big Ohio/Michigan football rivalry, and to encourage people to buy local rather than support the transportation of Nouveau Beaujolais across the big pond. Kinkead Ridge 2007 Cabernet...
The final day of my South African itinerary was a really good one, only partially spoiled by some really awful weather. From lunchtime onwards, it poured with rain in true English fashion. This was pretty annoying, because we had left some time free in the afternoon for some R&R – specifically, we'd planned to go down to Boulders Beach to see... [[ This is a content summary only. When Miles screamed about not drinking any "#$%@ing Merlot" in the movie Sideways, it started a push toward Pinot Noir and the beginning of California Merlot's fight for its reputation. The battle still continues and Producer/Director Rudolf N. McClain has just released the DVD of his film Merlove. On the cover is a quote from Wine Spectator that says simply: "Take this, Miles."...
Iran's Mehdi P., from Tabriz; Moshen G., from Shiraz; and Nemat Safavi, from Ardebil, are all awaiting execution for allegedly having gay sex — when they were under 18. Guilty of "lavat" (i.e. sexual conduct between two men, regardless of penetration), the three boys do not yet have dates set for their state-sponsored murders, but [...]
Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. Sangiovese , Shiraz and Pinot noir . 13.5%. Screwcap . Approx $A31. The upside down text on the label has the rather cryptic message in the land of mules there are no rules . What a curious, but thoroughly delicious wine. I started the night trying to dissect and detect the various components. It's a futile exercise, the strands are well hidden and the final...
You probably remember I was searching for a sangria recipe when planning our Housewarming Extravaganza . I found two great recipes in my friend Catherine's Williams-Sonoma Cocktails & Appetizers cookbook, for a White Sangria and this traditional Sangria. The red Sangria is good and a bit easier to prepare than the White Sangria, but honestly I do like the White Sangria best. Most everyone enjoyed...
In Boston. Miffed residents of a posh condo complex have invited the commanding officer of the USS Constitution over for a glass of wine so he can hear for himself that the frigate’s twice-daily cannon blasts – a tradition dating to 1798 – are “more disruptive to the neighborhood than you might have imagined.” Much better all [...]
http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2009/11/oh_thank_heavens_7-elevens_mak.php Good wine? Well, maybe - but the price is certainly right.... no word if it'll be in the slurpie machine. Dallas-based 7-Eleven's had a few proprietary wines on shelves for some time, among them Sonoma Crest and Thousand Oaks, but today comes word that the convenience store's actually in the private-label business...
This week we look a three wines that won’t be the easiest to find. The first is a Cabernet blend from Sorrenberg (http://www.sorrenberg.com/), a Beechworth winery who sell most of their wines via a mailing list. We follow this up with a Gamay from Roundstone (http://www.roundstonewine.com.au/), a winery that earlier this year was destroyed in [...]
Head Wines 'The Brunette' Syrah 2008 (Barossa Valley, SA) $35, Screwcap, 13.5% 'The Brunette' comes from a high elevation vineyard in Moppa, which consists of heavy soils of deep red clay and ironstone that give structure, longevity and reward from cellaring. Admirably, this wine matches that description well. What I particularly like is the restraint on offer, though this equals a desperate need for...
After tasting the oh my god good 2007 Kelly Fox Wines Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard, I came home to homemade butternut squash soup, wheat levain and apple, gruyere and walnut salad for dinner. With that Dundee Hills inspiration, what else to try but the 2006 Crowley Chardonnay from the same Maresh Vineyard (pronounced Marsh). Tyson Crowley's a friend, but I'll still recommend his wine because it's that...
French wine production and marketing is set for major change this year, but will it amount to any more than old wine in new bottles? A new system of EU wide regulation aims to end the overproduction of wines, and to redirect spending towards making the European wine market more competitive. As part of the plan the EU is hoping to take around 175,000 hectares of uncompetitive vineyards out of the market
French wine growers are protesting against EU plans to permit the blending of white and red grapes to produce rose wines. The proposal has emerged as part of a package of measures from the EU Commission aimed at assisting the European wine industry with an assault on world markets. When the issue was considered by the EU in January, it received the support of the French government who clearly did not
