Saranac really makes a lot of styles, so many that I can buy their variety six-pack and find no beers that I've reviewed (though I've had a couple of these before). Adirondack Lager: The good news is that this isn't a bland lager. The bad news is it doesn't taste quite right (at least not to me). Clear, light amber color, light hop aroma. It's made with both Hallertau and Cascades, and you can kind...

The Great American Beer Fest is this weekend in Denver, and as luck would have it I'm actually here and got to go to the festival. I'll have a lot more on my day at the Fest and all that goes along with it, but I wanted to drop a special post congratulating those Texas Breweries that were awarded . - In the Kellerbier/Zwickelbier category Texas had two winners: Gold: Helles Keller from Fredicksburg...

Okay, I'm an idiot. After hitting "post" on the previous rant, it ocurred to me that the "win percentage" isn't really based on the number of breweries in the state, but the breweries who submitted beers. And guess what? There were 62 Colorado breweries at this year's GABF. That's a win percentage of 55%. Not shabby. But Oregon won 19 medals on 24 breweries.* That's a win percentage of 79%. A far better...

The Great American Beer Festival held their coveted awards ceremony yesterday, and by afternoon had the list of winners online; you can view the page here . They have the complete list in PDF format, but I like the searchable format they have on that page too; it makes it easy to pull the list of Oregon winners. All in all, Oregon brewers brought home 19 medals: 9 Gold, 3 Silver, and 7 Bronze. Here's...

A few more observations on the GABF results. First, let's start with the brewery awards. The large brewer of the year is Anheuser-Busch, and Pyramid was the mid-sized brewery of the year. Both companies had watermark rocky years--Magic Hat picked up the ever-listing Pyramid (proud owner of the also ever-listing MacTarnahan's), while Bud, casting around for new products to shore up declining growth,...

The Austin American-Statesman had a wonderful interview in today's edition with world-famous former Austin brewer Pierre Celis . The 83-year-old is now retired and living back in his native Belgium, but Statesman writer Brad Buchholz (and not, oddly enough, regular beer columnist Patrick Beach) caught up with him on one of his frequent return visits. Just in case you're not clear on why he's world-famous:...

For 27 years, brewers and beer lovers have invaded Colorado to attend the Great American Beer Festival , which is part competition and part festival. This year, there was only one winner from North Carolina, and it just so happens to come from a brewery in Asheville. Highland brewing took the silver medal in the American Stout category, for their wonderful Black Mocha Stout. To my knowledge, this is...

As this posts, I'm accepting the trade and specialized beer and brewing media award of the Michael Jackson Beer Journalism Awards at the GABF; my piece in All About Beer on "The Real History of Craft Beer" won. My apologies to all the folks I told I was not going to be at GABF: the BA asked me not to tell anyone about winning the award, so I didn't. At all. And so this morning I left my hotel in San...
