THE rambling basement sequel to Waterloo’s ‘Bangalore Express’ has a colour scheme resembling a hyped sports shoe, austere seating and A3 placemats that double as menus (supplemented by a la carte flyers). The food compliment comprises a bewilderingly expansive array of dishes, from Indi-tapas to solitary low fat plate, via (drawing breath): French ostrich tikka, Caribbean curried...

Champagne, France. Pinot noir (69%), Chardonnay (31%). 12%. Cork. Source: Cellar. Beautiful, mature and golden, but still full of nourishment and pleasure. 18 hours on from the soft opening pffft I'm greedily sniffing at the last dregs, even now the bubbles remain, attached to the glass, hanging on for grim life, not daring to surface. . . Bruised apple, mushroom broth and peanut skins, the years have...

I have a confession to make. An apology too. The European Wine Bloggers excursion into the Alentejo was an excellent experience. The first stop was at Quinta do Mouro with the highly entertaining wine maker/owner Miguel Mouro. A highly entertaining chap, like many in the wine world, a 'character' who took us through his wine range with anecdote and aplomb... and it is here the apology/confession rears....

Sometime in the postwar years, some commercial genius sitting behind a desk in Lyon came up with a brilliant plan. Take the gamay grapes harvested at the end of the summer, and rather than letting the wine mature according to the traditional methods, bottle it up and sell it quick. No, better than that, call [...]

It's been said before. The on-line beer community is a thriving little micro-cosm of generosity. Yesterday, a package arrived from Rick Kempen ( @eurodog on Twitter), the face of Bier & Co, the Dutch importers and wholesalers of the kinds of US craft beers that make beer geeks drool, and the suppliers of BeerTemple in Amsterdam, at which I had the pleasure of visiting on the opening night . The...

I confess to being a little cynical about the various health scares and advice when it comes to food and wine! Unless there is clear and substantial medical evidence (as there has been with cigarettes) then I tend to take the view that most things are OK in moderation. For some time there has been [...]

On the Sunday before Thanksgiving we do dinner for friends who will be away with family on Thursday. It's the works: turkey, pumpkin pie etc with champagne. Then on Thursday we'll do our favorites: roast beef and dungeness crab with a nicee cabernet sauvignon. We usually celebrate a whole week of Thanksgiving to mark my coming to America in 1978 just before Thanksgiving 31 years ago. We also give thanks...

Finally getting round to sorting out the photographs taken of Lisbon, of the European Wine Bloggers Conference and the associated vineyard trips... The Lisbon apartment was just a short walk from Santa Apolonia station; up a couple of hills obviously, this being Lisbon, right in the heart of the old-town Alfama . Time pressures precluded any great exploration sadly, we didn't make it to the Bairro...

Jean Descombes Morgon is one of my favorite wines, and I know that it ages well for at least 10 to 15 years. This 2002 either represents a weak vintage of Descombes Morgon or is in an awkward stage at the moment. It's a medium garnet color, and there is quite a bit of tannin floating at the bottom of the bottle. Both the aromas and flavors are a bit muted but offer up pretty notes of cherries and red...

As I mentioned in my last post, I got a selection of fine wines from three of my siblings, I have divided them up into three groups. Old World Whites (L-R) Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean 2005 - I've had a number of Montrachets over the years including a particularly fine one the day after my wedding, whose name escapes me, and have always enjoyed them. Again am looking forward to this....

This is another one of my rambling rants that’s not really beer-related, or at least not beer-centric. If heavy media discussions are not your bag, feel free to stop here and just ignore this one. French wine production and marketing is set for major change this year, but will it amount to any more than old wine in new bottles? A new system of EU wide regulation aims to end the overproduction of wines, and to redirect spending towards making the European wine market more competitive. As part of the plan the EU is hoping to take around 175,000 hectares of uncompetitive vineyards out of the market

French wine growers are protesting against EU plans to permit the blending of white and red grapes to produce rose wines. The proposal has emerged as part of a package of measures from the EU Commission aimed at assisting the European wine industry with an assault on world markets. When the issue was considered by the EU in January, it received the support of the French government who clearly did not
