People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within. - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Swiss-American psychiatrist and author

I had originally planned to title this post “Movies I’ve stared at recently that were not on TCM” but I decided that might be pushing it a bit. But that part is true; I watched these two 20th Century-Fox sleepers online, courtesy of Hulu.com . As always, there may be a spoiler or two…so don’t say you weren’t warned. Come to the Stable (1949) – Sisters Margaret...

The tools needed for making or serving something, for making the table look nice. As you all know, I love adding special things to the arsenal, things that inspire recipes or menu selections. Here are few recent additions: Never pass up tongs....

The stained glass window depicts St. John the Divine and was created by the Tiffany Studios. It was installed in the church in 1896. Proceeds from the sale of a Tiffany stained glass window will be used to repair a church's leaking roof so it can continue to host a winter shelter for people who need a place to sleep and a warm meal. Members of First Baptist Church in Brattleboro, Vermont, voted by...

Menhir is a band who have made subtle mutations upon their sound, to slowly improve through the years into their current form, which has a cleaner, polished interface. But it's not difficult to hear how they arrived at such a form, as their earlier output maintained pretty high production standards for the pagan black metal sub-genre, and as early as 1999 they were writing some fairly crushing material...

The mountains are for shopping! Between studio sessions of my class last weekend , the girls and I were able to get in some very enjoyable (a little too enjoyable) shopping. While almost every shop in Gatlinburg boasts an amazing supply of leather, fudge, knives and swimwear , and other's are called Cooter's Funhouse , there manages to also be some serious little jewels among the shopping venues. I...

Mercury glass, always popular during the holidays, is becoming a year-round decoration. Surrounded by leaves, bittersweet and pumpkins, the silvered glass looks timeless and elegant for Thanksgiving. Mercury glass is a misnomer, because it doesn't contain the toxic substance. It's a clear glass blown into double-walled shapes, then coated on the inside, through a hole in the bottom, with a formula...
