Let's get this out of the way first: The Volkswagen GTI is based on the new 2010 VW Golf. Yes, the Golf name is back: In 2006, Volkswagen dropped the Golf, returning to the Rabbit, which was the original name for this car from 1975 through 1984. Then it became the Golf, then in 2006 the Rabbit again, in 2010 the Golf again. Why? Even the people at Volkswagen don't seem to know.

As you may know already, yesterday we talked about the next-generation of the Vw Polo GTI and its brand new 1.4-liter turbocharged engine capable to develop around 200 hp. Today, we found out that the German manufacturer could bring a GTD version of the new Polo, to follow the success of the Volkswagen Golf GTD .

To be Europe’s top selling car is no mean feat but the sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf has done it in 5 straight months. Last August, the Golf sold 37,662 units, a 39.5% increase on the amount sold in 2008. So far in 2009, 376,013 units have been sold.

Announced for this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show , The 2010 Volkswagen Golf R made its debut today, prior to the official unveiling. Based on the Scirocco R , the new car comes with a 2.0-liter turbo engine capable to deliver 270 hp (195 kW) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm.
