GM's large international operation and the popularity of Buick in China leads to some strange intercontinental platform sharing. We untangle part of the mess below. Currently, Buick is selling the Daewoo Lacetti-based Buick Excelle in China. Yes, this is the same car the Suzuki Forenza was based on. But this is getting replaced! Not by a Daewoo product, but rather by the Buick Ying Lang , which is...

The Opel Astra is soon to be renamed the Ying Lang in China and will replace the ageing Daewoo Lacetti in Buick showrooms across China. The Ying Lang is going to launch at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this month, and will aimed squarely at the 6th generation VW Golf, and will be packing a range of naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Ying Lang literally means Shining Hero, and it may well be Buicks...

Filed under: Buick Now that General Motors has decreed that Buick will be one of its four core brands, its lineup will need to be fleshed out a bit. The Lucerne is going away momentarily and the mid-size Regal is on the way. However, that still leaves only three models, including the LaCrosse and Enclave. Earlier this year, GM took us on tour of the Buick design studio and showed off a six-vehicle...

This has been a fascinating week not so much for me (the Mayor has always maintained to me that she would consider a fourth term, and Sir Robert Jones’s quip about being the corporate backer behind a mayoral candidate and council was on the cards for weeks), but for the automotive industry. GM ’s board of directors has voted to retain Opel , which is a wise move for several reasons. First,...

This year’s Car of the Year shortlist strikes me as one of the most interesting for years, because of the variety. The seven-strong list of finalists for Europe’s most important “best car” competition — by virtue of the fact that it garners the opinions of 59 jurors from 22 countries — is often sometimes regarded as rather prosaic by critics. See what's been nominated...

These are the latest shots of the 2010 Opel Astra taken by regular cameras and not the automaker’s own glitzy press shots. While other cars might not look as great on non-official photos, the 2010 Opel Astra really does look every bit as dashing and attractive as it had been made out to be.
