VW could simply be acquiring the contract manufacturer's wide base of tooling. Karmann of late specialized in convertibles, building the Mercedes-Benz CLK for Mercedes-Benz, for example....

I was driving home the other night in great pain. Some fool had gaffer-taped my arms to a chair, and in the course of struggling free I had removed several hairs and a great deal of skin, which had been badly burnt just two days earlier, on a volcano in Chile. Mine is not really a conventional job.

The previous Mercedes-Benz CLK is something of an enigma--built around the C-Class platform, styled like the E-Class, and priced in between the two, the car sits in its own unique segment and has no direct competition from its rivals. Its sales history has been a strong success, especially in the U.S., but the car is on its way out, being ...

We’ve just been to the annual Automobiles of London auction in Battersea’s cool Evolution Centre. And quite frankly, came back astonished. Sure, this year’s auction was a more sombre affair, which didn’t feature a £2.5 million McLaren or an F1 puppet-masters’ ‘garage sale’ – but the metal on display did not disappoint. Like the super-rare Mercedes-Benz...

Number 2 of only 5 Mercedes Benz CLK GTR Roadsters made is due to go on sale at RM Auction's Automobiles of London event. The CLK GTR was built as a world beating racing car that would win the FIA GT Championship. This it did so successfully in 1997 and 1998 that in 1999 there where no other entries and the series was cancelled. It's hard to imagine a more devastatingly racing car but the road going...

Supercars like the SLS AMG and SL65 AMG Black Series might be the flagships for the current Mercedes-Benz lineup, but back in the late 1990s it was all about the CLK GTR -- an all-out race car slightly disguised as a road car. The street version you see here was built to homologate the race car that competed in the FIA's GT1 class in 1997 and 1998 (wining the championship in 1997). Each came with a...
