Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. The “fuselage” early-70s Chrysler is pretty well represented in this series, with this ‘71 Newport and this ‘71 Newport Royal, but seeing yesterday’s ‘70 Newport Royal ad made me decide to [...]

The "fuselage" early-70s Chrysler is pretty well represented in this series, with this '71 Newport and this '71 Newport Royal , but seeing yesterday's '70 Newport Royal ad made me decide to break out the photos of today's vast two-door luxury machine. I've found quite a few early-70s big Chryslers on the island, including this '71 Newport 4-door , so it's time to get another one of of these Detroit survivors its day of fame. I found this '71 Newport Royal 2-door hardtop in the same neighborhood as the '42 Pontiac Torpedo , and it parks on the street every day- no garage coddling for this C-body! The Newport Royal was the entry-level big Chrysler...

I slung my body deftly into the Saab, let the door clang shut behind me, and took a deep breath. Ah, that old car smell. Reminds me of all the aging cars I’ve owned in my life. My first car was a ‘63 Chrysler Newport, much like the one pictured here. It [...]

Since now I'm in the mood to look at mean-looking Detroit beaters, I'm breaking out some shots I took while enjoying a burritos-and-beer repast in the Oakland Coliseum BART parking lot prior to a baseball game. Apologies for the fuzztastic quality of my low-end cellphone camera, though I do think the grainy pixelated look does a good job of capturing the spirit of this fine automobile. If you're going...
