1970 Chrysler Newport [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. The “fuselage” early-70s Chrysler is pretty well represented in this series, with this ‘71 Newport and this ‘71 Newport Royal, but seeing yesterday’s ‘70 Newport Royal ad made me decide to [...]

1970 Chrysler Newport [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street , where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. The "fuselage" early-70s Chrysler is pretty well represented in this series, with this '71 Newport and this '71 Newport Royal , but seeing yesterday's '70 Newport Royal ad made me decide to break out the photos of today's vast two-door luxury machine. 1971 Chrysler Newport Royal: Makes Buying Chryslers Like Eating Salted Peanuts! [Classic Ad Watch]

The Newport Royal was priced a couple hundred bucks lower than the regular Newport; it came with less gingerbread and a 360 instead of the 383 engine, but was otherwise the same car. See, that's to get you hooked on Chryslers; the guy who buys the Royal now will go on to buy a Corboba a few years later, and by now he's in a Cirrus. Just like eating peanuts!

Obama Wowed by Truman’s Car

Visiting the former President’s home in Independence, Missouri, Obama marvels at Truman’s 1972 Chrysler Newport. “I wonder what kind of mileage this gets,” the Senator wonders. “I don’t know if it fits the new fuel efficiency plan,” replies bodyman Reggie Love. Read pool report here.

1971 Chrysler Newport Royal, With DOTS of the Week Poll [Down On The Street]

I've found quite a few early-70s big Chryslers on the island, including this '71 Newport 4-door , so it's time to get another one of of these Detroit survivors its day of fame. I found this '71 Newport Royal 2-door hardtop in the same neighborhood as the '42 Pontiac Torpedo , and it parks on the street every day- no garage coddling for this C-body! The Newport Royal was the entry-level big Chrysler...

That old car smell

I slung my body deftly into the Saab, let the door clang shut behind me, and took a deep breath. Ah, that old car smell. Reminds me of all the aging cars I’ve owned in my life. My first car was a ‘63 Chrysler Newport, much like the one pictured here. It [...]

Down On The Street Bonus Edition: 1964 Chrysler Newport

Since now I'm in the mood to look at mean-looking Detroit beaters, I'm breaking out some shots I took while enjoying a burritos-and-beer repast in the Oakland Coliseum BART parking lot prior to a baseball game. Apologies for the fuzztastic quality of my low-end cellphone camera, though I do think the grainy pixelated look does a good job of capturing the spirit of this fine automobile. If you're going...
