Tories attack Catherine Ashton

Yesterday morning I was accosted by Conservative MEP Charles Tannock (on the left in the picture) and harangued about the perils, as he perceived it, of Cathy Ashton being the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs. He has now expanded his views on the Conservative Home website. Following this outburst, it became apparent later in the day [...]

Left Foot Forward expose ‘gay rights’ MEP

What on earth were Tory press officers thinking when they put Charles Tannock MEP up against Stephen Fry on Channel 4 News? “It’s very clear that the modern Conservative Party is fully committed to equal opportunities, to tolerance, to anti-discrimination measures.” So far, so party line. But talking of his time as a local councillor for a [...]

Tory MEP’s false claims on gay rights

Charles Tannock MEP sought to defend his party's record on gay rights last night but his own history of opposing equalities legislation has come under scrutiny. Bless Them For Trying

Yesterday the Obama moment of Welsh Labour’s i nternet project Aneurin Glyndwr , scooped this story about Tory MEP Charles Tannock and his proposals to charge people £10 to visit their GP. In fairness they were only about 9 days behind me and the rest of the blogsphere . A daily must read Peter? Hardly. Almost makes you feel sorry for the Paul Flynn's and David Taylor's of this word that...

More NHS Worries For Cameron

Another day and another mess for the Tories on the NHS. Charles Tannock, a Tory MEP and a senior spokesperson for the party in Europe has suggested the idea of charging everyone £10 to visit their GP. I am not actually against his proposal for charging for non attendance to appointments (unless there is a valid reason) but the idea of charging for the right to see a GP is, in my mind ridiculous....

Sometimes you have to wonder

Just which planet some of these folks are on Dr Charles Tannock, a former consultant psychiatrist, who has been a Conservative London MEP since 1999 thinks it’s a good idea to charge people £10 to see their GP and then fine others for failing to keep appointments! I’m all for having a debate about the NHS, but [...]

London and Wandsworth’s European election results

It was a fairly good night for the Conservatives in London - three of London’s eight MEPs were returned as Conservatives. Congratulations to Charles Tannock, Syed Kamall and Marina Yannakoudakis on their elections. It’s also pleasing that the BNP did not win a seat here. Though disturbing that they managed to take two seats in the north. [...]

Euro-election live thread, part deux

10.55 PM - It appears Labour have lost a seat in Yorkshire & Humberside, with UKIP 2nd overall. Worst of all it appears the BNP's Andrew Brons, formerly of the NF and the National Socialist Movement, will be duking it out for the last vacancy in Yorkshire with the second UKIP candidate. We shall see. Also, why the hell didn't Labour have Richard Corbett at the top of the list, instead of the useless...

Parliament for beginners

JUST got back from the BBC Scotland studios where I took part in The Westminster Hour. The panel were me, Elfyn Llwyd of Plaid Cymru and Tory MEP Charles Tannock, whose closing comments in the short debate with which I wanted to take issue. We had been discussing the Speaker (inevitably) and Tannock volunteered that what [...]
