A COMPANY which failed to secure the tender to build the €63 million National Aquatic Centre has claimed in the High Court that the winning consortium would have been excluded from the tender process if vital information about it had not been withheld from then taoiseach Bertie Ahern and his government.

Today (16th November 2009) the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, is apologising to adult care leavers in Australia for past abuse that they experienced in care as children. These governments have given a lead. Jersey needs to follow their example and begin to restore its reputation by showing that it cares about the past victims of abuse and wants to make amends for past wrongs. The Jersey Care...

Has “a lot of time” for Bertie Ahern, one of the few jackeens he has time for. Is full of half-baked tales when filled with drink e.g. that Dan Breen once hid from the Black and Tans in a bread bin in his mother's house. …... Continue reading »

Published: Tuesday 29 September 2009 Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende is conducting a "very subtle" lobbying campaign in Brussels to be considered a candidate for the job of EU Council president, according to sources, who forecast that should the Lisbon Treaty enter into force, he will be strongly backed by Angela Merkel. Why not? A native English-speaker who has been in Washington for a while, but from a country which is in the Eurozone and wasn't in the Iraq War. The two main Irish parties are notoriously difficult to place on any normal ideological spectrum, but "Christian Democrat" is not a bad description of either, and perhaps especially of Fine Gael. Within that, Bruton has a proven record of being...

Bertie Ahern, the former Irish taoiseach, was quoted in the Times earlier this month as warning Scots than voting for independence could saddle future generations with debt and claimed it was unlikely to happen for a generation. At least he admits it is likely to happen. Jason Allardyce is the writer of the Times article and I have found Mr Allardyce's articles to be reasonably accurate in the past...

It is reported that the star of the first Emperor of the Holy European Empire is fading. Incroyable. Who else could wear the crown of Charlemagne with such pseudo-royal finesse? Who else could possibly match Tony Blair on the world stage? Who else could charm and smarm his way from Rome and Berlin to Paris and Dublin? Who else could create the role ex nihilo and give the semblance of an omnipotent...
