Every year there are new world events that see possible border changes and a restructure to the way the world’s countries and territories are configured. Think back to 50 years ago, and the world’s map was very different. There are literally a hundred countries that exist today that did not exist a hundred years ago. [...]

Now that Russia has recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the improbable phantom nation of Transnistria (1) might be gearing up for its own fifteen minutes of geopolitical fame. Like the aforementioned breakaway regions of Georgia (itself a former Soviet republic), Transnistria is a bizarre splinter off the old Soviet block, and now [...]

Russia’s Vladimir Putin darkly hinted that his country would invade and dismember Georgia months before last month’s war in the South Caucasus region began. “We have Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Pridnestrovie [Transnistria],” he said back in February this year after Kosovo declared independence from Serba, “and they say Kosovo is a special case?” Putin has a point, but only a very small one. The overwhelming...

Despite the tragic loss of life, nothing much seems to have changed in Georgia as the pieces re-settle. Except perhaps making ultimate resolution more difficult, and strengthening both sides ties to their Russian and US backers. But South Ossetia and Abkhazia are only two regions that make up the four ‘frozen conflicts’ remaining from the breakup of the Soviet Union. Transnistria and Nagorno-Karabakh...

At their meeting in Sochi — planned home of the 2014 Winter Olympics and just a hop, skip and APC ride from Abkhazia — Russia’s president Dmitri Medvedev warned Moldova’s president not to repeat the “Georgian mistake.” Moldova, of course, claims Transnistria as part of its internationally recognized territory, but has never exercised actual control since [...]

"Sometimes it is hard to get solid news about Transnistria"? It is *always* hard to get solid news about Transnistria. But now I have heard of it three times in the past week--the only times I have heard about it in the past two years, first in a Walter Jon Williams story about human photosynthesis, then in a lunch conversation over the state of eastern Europe, and now Doug Muir: > Transnistria: underwater?:...

It’s sometimes hard to get solid news about Transnistria. No international news agencies report regularly from there, and it doesn’t have a good English-language site. News stories about the breakaway state tend to come out of Russia, Moldova or Ukraine, often in the local languages. So it’s not clear what impact the recent flooding [...]

In recent years, it seems like a solution to Moldova's long-unresolved secessionist conflict is always being forecast but never quite materializes. Meanwhile, the people who live in the unrecognized Transnistria just try to get by. At least a couple of the territory's netizens, however, seem unhappy with some of the initiatives of their de facto government. Lyndon Allin translates their posts.
