The Mix: Asian Population of the USA
Erik's Choice (Free subscription) | yesterday
After this post, I'll give demographics a rest for at least a little while. All sorts of other demographic variables are still in the pipeline, however. Overall, the population of the USA has jumped to about 308 million, of which more than 80% resides in urbanized areas (one of many very bad signs for the Republican Party, incidentally, in the long run). Add another 100 million people or so by 2050....

Helen Clark in IPS highlights a persistent challenge for Hanoi and other cities : As Vietnam’s big cities are increasingly deluged by floods, the infrastructure cannot keep up. At the end of October last year Hanoi suffered the worst floods in over 50 years. Some streets were under more than two metres of water, resulting in a death toll of 20, many as a result of electrocution from makeshift...

I've spent a good part of the last week re-reading Neil Sheehan's book, A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam. Partly, this is just happenstance; I found a nicely annotated hardback copy in a local used book store. But it's also because I wanted to look again at the 1962-64 period of the Vietnam War to see how much it resembles our current situation in Afghanistan. I don't have...
