Ft. Hood has exposed a terrible wound in the fabric of America, but that wound was there long before a lone gunman named Major Hassan decided to go postal on his fellow soldiers. Our ethical and moral values have been obliterated since September 11, 2001. Racism is on the rise. Religious fundamentalism of the kind that justifies the slaughter of innocents and torture and inhumanity has reared its ugly...

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO BILL FISHER (Free subscription) | 9 hours ago
By William Fisher Human rights advocates and legal scholars are voicing sharp criticism of President Barack Obama’s revisions to the Bush administration’s Military Commissions Act of 2006, characterizing them as unnecessary and saying the new law will lead to further delays and create a system of “second-class justice.” One powerful advocacy group, the American Civil Liberties...

The Uighurs are Muslims from East Turkmenistan who no doubt have legitimate grievances against the Chinese who have conquered and colonized their country, if such it ever was. But some of them decided to pursue jihad against China and went to Afghanistan to train with al Qaeda. They were there at the end of 2001 when we routed the Taliban and captured a number of terrorists and terrorist trainees....

DAY FORTY THREE OF A WORLD NOT THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION ? The Men Who Stare at Goats Starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey Directed by Grant Heslov Rated R It's a deviously warped story, the kind that has to be at least partially true, and according to the disclaimer at the beginning of the film, it is: "More of this is true that you would believe" replaces "Based on a true story" or "Inspired by a true...

It's the day after the day after. And the punditocracy is still analyzing the off year elections. I thought E.J. Dionne had the most sober take --bad news for incumbents, Democrats, an annoyed electorate. If anything I think he may have underestimated the level of irritability out there. The defeat of Thomas Suozzi, the executive in Nassau County, should have been a real wake up call to Democrats....

How RINO is too RINO for Graham? It's unclear. Even he's sour on Scozzafava, but apparently only because she was too far left for the "mainstream" in NY-23, not because she was too far left, period. Like Ace, I'm happy to help build a bridge between centrists and ...
