Worries And Problems

Some of my last hours in Casablanca are turning out to be not the enjoyable ones I had hoped for. Yesterday, my camera's memory card failed, with over 600 photos on it and it contained all my pictures from Casablanca. Not only that, I was in an important meeting with a big music artist, so I failed to get any pictures except for a couple of snaps on a tiny digital camera. I spent over six hours trying...

Jeanne-Claude, Christo's wife and collaborator, obituary

She was one half of the of the environmental artist known to the world as Christo The flame-haired artist Jeanne-Claude – or Mrs Christo, as she sometimes called herself – worked with her husband to mummify the Pont Neuf, to envelop a series of Miami islands in flamingo pink nylon, to bind the German Reichstag building in aluminium fabric and to erect 7,503 billowing saffron "gates"...

Days In Casablanca

For the last few days I have been in the vast Moroccan city of Casablanca . It is the capital in all but name, and where serious wealth uncomfortably co-exists with grinding poverty. Daylight hours are seriously full-on with the city very overcrowded, both with people and gridlocked traffic. My relatives are living in a modest but very comfortable apartment right in the centre of downtown so it is...

Thierry Henry Cheats - Who's Surprised?

What a shock, 'professional footballers cheat' sensation. In all my years of spectating and officiating I never suspected that such things took place. Just like police chief Captain Renault, played by Claude Rains, in the 1942 film classic Casablanca on visiting Rick's Café Américain, "I am shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on here". Next you'll be telling me that...

The return of the Captain Renault award

It has been sometime since I have handed out a Captain Renault award. I thought they were going to be retired. For those who don’t remember the immortal Captain from the film Casablanca: Rick: How can you close me up?...

Values from Chile

Sign identifying Sauvignon Blanc Clone 242 in a Leyda Valley vineyard (Photo ©Tom Hyland) I love the wines of Chile and I’ve done my share of writing about the qualities of this country’s efforts, especially with the vibrant white wines of San Antonio and Leyda as well as the gorgeous reds from Maipo and Colchagua Valleys. These wines represent the upper tier of Chile’s wines...

Surprise: biz group sues to Upgrade a species listing

It’s not every day that a group run by former Bush Administration Interior Department honcho Craig Manson files suit to get the status of a threatened species upgraded to endangered. It’s also not every day that such a group piggybacks on an earlier petition filed by the Tucson-based Center for Biological Diversity. But that’s what’s transpiring in the fragile Sacramento-San...

Wertzone Classics: Red Dwarf IV

The fourth season of Red Dwarf is interesting in that it is the only one without any major format changes. Some of the behind-the-scenes changes were quite big, most notably the moving of production from Manchester to the far superior Shepperton Studios near London, but otherwise the status quo from Season 3 remains unchanged. The season begins with Camille , starting a brief two-year tradition resulting...

Safi School Run

This week my aunt and uncle-in-law have left Safi to go to Casablanca for a few days. Therefore, it's been left for the wife and yours truly to take their son, Saad, to school in the mornings. Seeing as I'm waking up really early these days, then that's not any kind of a problem and it's nice to walk in the cool morning air. Naturally, I slung the camera around my neck and recorded some of the sights...

Casablanca Obverse

Oh no, you say-another one of those posts. I know some prefer the politi-bitters, or the theologic cambrianism. But again, Doug with the old movies full of actors who have been dead lately. According to the imdb, Alida Valli, pictured above with Joseph Cotton, passed from this world all the way back in 2006. Also according to imdb, she was in over 100 films-I just watched "The Third Man"...
