When speaking about Internet worms, I like to point out that my personal computer hasn't been connected to the Internet in years, at least not directly. I've had a WiFi router connected to the Internet via my cable modem since late 2003, which provides me with a security benefit. NAT routers act like a hardware firewall. Only requested traffic makes its way to my PC. So, no direct Windows connection...

eldavojohn writes "Wired is reporting on a simple hack putting some 65,000 customers at risk. The hack to gain administrative access to the cable modem/router combo is remarkably simple: '[David] Chen, founder of a software startup called Pip.io, said he was trying to help a friend change the settings on his cable modem and discovered that Time Warner had hidden administrative functions from its...

I was wondering if someone could recommend a good wireless router. I have installed and older SMC wireless router in our Church. The church isn't really that big, but the signal is just inconsistant everywhere, even if your sitting still. I think I just want to install a newer, better one with a better range. Any suggestions'? I don't have a hugh budget, so something in the $75-$100 range is about...

While SMC's products may have disappeared from the shelves at Best Buy, the company still makes solid small-network products. The SMC's latest wireless-n home router, the SMCWGBR14-N Barricade N, runs a bit slow at the optimal wireless computing distance (about 20 feet). It doesn't support 5-GHz operation—a fairly big drawback—but it's reasonably priced ($174.99 list), [...]
