Ok, so I got me a nice new laptop, and Acer 7735Z (I wanted something cheap-ish, with as large a screen as possible - for browsing, moves and maybe some freeciv. the 17" screen clinched it, vista didn't - it won't last long) Anyway, I digress. The main problem I had was with getting Vista talking to perhaps the worst router i've ever ever had the misfortune to use; the Thomson TG585v7. Setup wifi...

Not being a Harry Potter fan the “wearabouts clock” has passed me by, but this DIY location-indicating replica is impressive enough even without the back story. The concept is that rather than display the time, the clock’s numerous hands show whereabouts each family member is, according to various locations (or situations, such as “mortal peril”) around the clock face....

Second verse, same as the first! It's Cyber-Monday, that retailer-coined holiday term that's supposed to be a continuation of Black Friday deals mainly offered via online purchases. It remains to be seen whether this day is actually a "prime" shopping day or not, as not nearly as many retailers are offering as good of a discount as what you might have seen this past Friday (or weekend, for...

For a long time I have used a Debian based machine called megatron as a gateway at home. Megatron had two NIC’s where one was connected to an SDSL modem, and the other was connected to a Linksys WRT54GL router (which is running the Tomato firmware). These two switched places a while back so that [...]

MAKE subscriber bumpercrop writes in to share this excellent Harry Potter -inspired whereabout clock, The Magic Clock . In the story, the clock is a magical item with hands that show the location of each family member. This beautifully constructed remake does the same, except that twitter feeds, a hacked router and a custom clock movement are used in place of unspecified magic. I love the attention...

A Linksys wireless router allows the computers in your home to access the internet wirelessly. Depending on the type of wireless route you go, you may or may not have to connect the main computer via Ethernet cord to the router and then link all other computers wireless. They do have completely wireless routers, but I wanted to make sure you know there are different kinds and ways to make a connection....

My cable company has recently begun to offer Internet access plans with speeds over 30 Mbps (60, 80 and 100 Mbps). However my D-link router is unable to go beyond 30 Mbps if I use NAT; it reaches 60-70 Mbps only if NAT is disabled.
