Apparently there's a hostile takeover of Atmel in the works. One of the companies involved is Microchip. One might suspect that, if the takeover succeeds, Microchip will kill off Atmel's microcontroller family. Probably not all at once, but maybe shifting it to maintenance / not recommended for new designs status, and slowly jacking up the prices, to encourage everyone to switch (back) to the PIC family....
