Smartphones: Buying Guide

Ever since the iPhone was released by Apple, smartphones have gained rapidly in popularity. Despite appearances, people seeking smartphones have always had a choice. This guide examines the alternatives someone in the market for a smartphone has and balances up the pros and cons of the main options.

The main options with smartphones can be split into three 'camps' with the long running Windows Mobile operating system, especially in its new 'version 7' guise competing with the market leader, iPhone and Android.

Latest smartphones

As with many market places, there are several options. Nokia, in particular, have a large market share while Blackberry's are especially popular with business users. We have the three main OS's, one of which has a huge market share. The other two are not manufacturer specific.

iPhone

iPhones caused a sensation with their release several years ago, and now are onto the fourth iteration. With time, many of the faults previously found with iPhones have been rectified, although the lack of changeable battery or Micro SD support is still a hindrance.

Android

Android is a recent OS that is fast becoming the phone of choice and now has biggest market share. Android is both an open source containing an independent handset, allowing greater flexibility in development and finding a handset that fits in with their requirements.

Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile 7 is the new kid on the block and brings with it an innovative interface and the support of Microsoft. It has been a long time coming and unfortunately shows its youth with missing features or poorly implemented features. An example being that changing the micro SD card causes a factory reset of settings. MS will no doubt mature this OS into a competitive one in the future.

Blackberry

Blackberry phones are extremely popular as a business solution. They integrate well with email facilities and have features aiming at business use. Even today, they are extremely capable 'consumer' phones, especially if you want a full QWERTY keyboard.

Which one to choose?

Ultimately the choice of which handset and OS to buy is up to you. This guide has focused on the OS because that is the overriding factor in choosing your phone. Apple brings world leading support, but it is a system that only does
(officially) what Apple wants you to and doesn't provide support for removable batteries or Micro-SD cards.

Palm smartphones
Android and Windows are not handset specific. You can look at a larger screen for better web browsing, or Micro SD support for data transfer benefits. Ultimately smartphones are hands on gadgets, so try some out before your final purchase.
