Motherboards: Buying Guide

One of the key components of a computer is the motherboard. All functional parts that make a computer what it is connect to the motherboard, making it one of the most important things in your computer. In this article, I will be writing a buying guide and covering some important things that you should look for when purchasing a motherboard.

Defining your needs
If you are building your own computer from scratch, upgrading your old one or replacing the motherboard in your old computer, you should first take into account what you need it for.

If you are gamer, business person, just a web surfer, or someone who just sends emails with their computer, the PC does not need to much power. On the other hand, if you are a gamer, you will want a motherboard that has a large assortment of ports so that you can add more RAM, graphics cards or hardware in the future.

In terms of speed
When you think of a motherboard for processing and performance, remember that the more cores, it has the faster it will be. The most common new processors are quad motherboards. However, there are six core computers out there now.

Dual core motherboards are still popular for several year old machines. If you are choosing a motherboard for your computer, you should choose one based on the components that you already have.

Compatibility with other components
The motherboard will have to be compatible with those components, otherwise you will have to replace everything you already have in order to get compatible parts for your new motherboard. Likewise, if you are building a computer, you will choose the motherboard first and then the compatible parts to go with it.

Replacing the motherboard
If you are replacing the motherboard in your laptop, there is much more work to go along with it. Due to the compact shape of a laptop, you will need to consider your space restrictions as well if you plan to do any type of upgrading.

In the case of laptops
Laptop motherboards tend to be specific to a laptop's case. For example, if you have an HP laptop, you might have to get that specific motherboard from HP, as anything other than one of HP's laptop motherboards designed for your specific machine just might not fit the case.

Whether you are looking for gaming motherboards or replacement motherboards, make sure you get all the information on the one you plan to buy. You should also make sure that it is right for your needs and confirm compatibility with the hardware you already have or plan to get.
