HiFi Systems: Buying Guide

Despite the popularity of home cinema system, hifi systems are still the most popular way for people to enjoy their music. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind as you select your next stereo.

Hifi systems allow you to enjoy music in stereo and, while it may lack the enveloping effect of home cinema, stereo sound is quite capable of giving you hours of great pleasure listening to your favourite tunes.

Components

Hifi systems consist of an amplifier, two speakers and one or more sources for playback. There are many different types of hifi systems that cater to different budgets and lifestyle needs.

Available media

With the evolution of technology, you also have the option of enjoying your favourite music on a variety of media. While some media, such as cassettes, have become obsolete, others such as LPs or records remain popular among some enthusiasts. However, the most popular form of playback is the CD which is usually found in most hifi systems.

Computer-based hifi systems

The recent popularity of downloaded songs has also see the advent of computer-based hifi systems with the music stored in the hard disk being the main source of the system. Stereos with iPod docks which directly access the music stored on the iPod are a great example of this type of system. Tuners that play FM radio and internet radio are usually found in many hifi systems.

Mini hifi systems

Most people have mini hifi systems which are all-in-one systems that include speakers, amplifier, CD player and tuner. These are relatively compact and can be kept on a bookshelf. For those who are short of space, there are micro hifi systems that are even smaller and fit into the tightest of spaces. The big advantages with these systems are that they are compact, have all the necessary components included and offer convenience of use.

Dedicated audiophiles in pursuit of greater quality often invest in systems made of separate equipment, often from different manufacturers. These hifi systems consist of different components that can be mixed and matched to obtain the desired sound.

Separate equipment

A wide range of equipment can be found in the separate equipment market. Speakers, for example, can be bookshelf models or floorstanders, with electrostatics and horn speakers being the more exotic variants. Amplifiers can be integrated amplifiers or separate pre and power amplifiers. With a plethora of options, this is a large market that caters to various tastes and interests.

Whether you opt for the convenience of a mini system or the variety of separates, there are great hifi systems to suit all requirements and budgets.
