Food Processors: Buying Guide

Many professional chefs see food processors not as a luxury but as an essential piece of kitchen equipment. If you choose the right machine, food processors can save a huge amount of time and allow you to quickly prepare very impressive dishes. In this article we'll show you what to look for when buying a food processor.

Commercial food processors are large expensive machines but just because these are beyond the budget of most people, it doesn't mean that you can't get performance which is nearly as good. Small food processors use smaller motors so they aren't as reliable so when choosing your machine, look for the highest power motor you can find.

Here are some key features to look out for :

Cleaning
If the food processor is not easy to disassemble and clean then you will not use it as often. Look for hygienic stainless steel machines which can be taken apart easily. Try to avoid cheaper machines whose cheap white plastic will stain easily with foods like curry ingredients and beetroot.

Attachments
Most food processors come with a range of attachments that can be used for chopping, slicing mixing and juicing. The more expensive machines will have a larger range of attachments, so check first if you actually use them. Mini food processors generally come with the basics and will be a good option for most people.

Design
Cuisinart and Viking Food Processors have particularly attractive designs which are available in a range of colours and styles. If you intend to have the unit out on display then you will need to make sure that it matches your kitchen. Food processors for small kitchens are also available and Breville Food Processors can easily be disassembled and store in a cupboard.

Ease of Use
All the blades and accessories should clip into place using a modular design which will allow you to swap parts easily part way through a recipe. If you make a lot of cakes then spending a little extra on a machine with a whisk attachment will mean that you can save money on a separate electrical hand whisk.

There are a large range of food processors on the market but once you have established your budget, your choice will be easy. Look for a motor of at least 300W and ensure the machine has all the accessories you need.
