Espresso Machines: Buying Guide

The true coffee lover will appreciate that nothing can match the taste of commercial espresso machines. In this article, we will show you how to buy a unit that will match the quality of even the best restaurant espresso machines.

Consider how much effort you want to put into your cup of coffee before you buy an espresso machine. Home espresso machines are available as manual, semi automatic and full automatic units. It is easier to achieve a passable cup of espresso with automatic espresso machines, but the best coffee comes from manual or semi-automatic units like Lavazza or Gaggia espresso machines.

Automatic
Nespresso espresso machines are a prime example of automatic units. These pod espresso machines use pre-bought cartridges (also known as pods or pucks) to make the coffee. The user doesn't have to worry about steam, pressure or tamping so the operation is extremely simple. For the purist however, the hands off experience may take away from the joy of a freshly brewed coffee. Pods can also be much more expensive than coffee beans.

Semi Automatic
These units have a manually controlled pump but have automatically controlled temperature and water volume settings. These are by far the most popular machines.
Expect to pay anything between 200 pounds and 1000 pounds for a quality unit. Many cheaper machines brag about their high brewing pressures, but anything higher than 9 bar is pointless as this is the optimal pressure for extraction.

Manual
These units are for true coffee enthusiasts. They use manual lever pressure rather than steam pressure to extract the coffee. They can be extremely expensive and require a lot of skill while using. It is advisable for your first unit to buy a semi automatic or automatic unit. Semi automatic espresso machines will produce a consistently better brew than manual machines for someone without either a lot of experience or training.

Grinders
Top espresso machines are useless without the right accessories. Start with a good quality bean grinder. ommercial automatic espresso machines may even have one of these built in. If you have just bought a semi-auto machine like Illy or Jura espresso machines, then expect to spend around 30-50% of your budget on the grinder alone - it does make that much difference!

If you drink a lot of coffee, espresso machines will save you money in the long term but this shouldn't be your reason for purchase. There is almost as much fun in preparing the coffee as there is drinking it, so try out a few machines at your local independent retailer to get a feel for what you like.
