DVD recorders: buying guide

DVD recorder, quite similar to VCR, is rightly considered as 21st century VCR. The difference between the two is that virtually every VHS tape works with the VCR but, it is not the case with DVD players or recorders.

Types

The DVD recorders are available in different formats like DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM formats along with VR modes and dubbing options. Hence, choosing DVD recorders can become quite tough.

Features

While buying the DVD recorders, the buyers should look for these features so that this product proves to be a good replacement of the VCR.

NTSC Analog TV Tuner

NTSC analog TV tuner must be built in the DVD recorders to pull in TV channels. Analog TV channels are received by the tuner through antenna or cable and if one has the satellite system, one will be able to use the DVD recorder just like a VCR.

Electronic Program Guide (EPG)

EPG provides a nice graphical display of the TV programs coming on various channels at different times. This display includes all the programs that will come within the coming eight days. This gives viewers the chance to sort out according to categories to quickly locate the show that one wishes to record. The program can be recorded by a push of a button.

Progressive scan

People having digital TV or are planning to buy a digital TV should opt for the DVD recorder having progressive scan feature. This will result in brighter image with no scan lines and will also result in fewer motion artifacts.

Variable bit-rate recording

DVD recorder having this feature records the video with a variable bit-rate approach instead of a constant MPEG-2 video bit rate. A variable bit-rate approach is used to reduce the amount of data in the compressed video stream.

A DVD recorder is quite similar to VCR, except that discs are used instead of tapes to record and play TV programs and prerecorded videos. The quality of a DVD recorder is far more superior compared to video quality of with VCR.

The latest DVD recorders are able to compete with hard disk based personal video recorders due to the built-in hard disk drives that has been the latest advancement in DVD recorders. Some top brands are Toshiba DVD recorders or Sony DVD recorders.
