DVD Players: Buying Guide

There has never been a better time to buy a new DVD player. Prices are coming down and all the while, the quality of products is increasing. In this article, we'll show you what to look for when buying a new DVD player.

There are many different types of DVD players available and choosing the right one also depends on your budget. Be sure to consider these options:

Multi Regional DVD players
In the UK region, 2 PAL DVD players are the standard. However, if you want to play discs from another country, then all region DVD players are now extremely cheap. When DVD started to become popular, region free units cost many thousands of pounds. Now, it's even possible to get region free portable DVD players for less than a hundred pounds.

HD DVD Players
Blu-ray DVD players are now the standard in high definition video. The discs can store vast quantities of data which allows them to deliver higher quality video and audio. It is also possible to buy an "up-scaling" DVD player which boosts the picture quality of a standard disc to near Blu-ray quality. If your funds are limited then you are better off spending your money on a good up-scaling unit rather than a cheap Blu-ray player as Blu-ray discs are nearly double the price of standard DVDs.

All-in-one DVD Players
Multisystem DVD players also include a home cinema amplifier and surround sound speakers. These can be a good buy, but you must remember that it is not possible to upgrade these units as you can with Hi-fi separates.

Combined VCR and DVD players
VHS tapes have been obsolete for many years but many people still have a large home movie collection. If you are one of these people, then VCR and DVD players are available as one unit. These are particularly useful to copying your old tapes to new DVDs.

Hi Fi Separates
If you are serious about your sound quality, then this is the way to go. Marantz DVD players are a great starting point for people interested in obtaining the best sound and picture quality available. Bear in mind that this route is not cheap and you will also have to buy a home cinema receiver and a set of satellite speakers.

DVD players' electronics and optics are the defining factor in their quality. The more money you pay, the better sound and picture they are able to deliver. However, if you don't have quality speakers and visual equipment to match, then you are wasting your money. Be sure to buy a DVD player that matches your existing equipment.
