Videogames are a constantly and rapidly evolving medium. While this means that amazing advances in gameplay and graphics consistently surprise us, it also means that those very same advances are destined to look rustic, quaint or simply atrocious in the short space of a few years. Just take the PlayStation era. The move from sprite based gaming to 3D was hailed as a masterpiece, yet most of the PSOne...

Went to the gym the other day. Not been for a while as I have recently discovered the liberating past time of long-distance road running. That, and the fact that 'working out' in a stifling mirror-filled room full of narcissistic, impossibly muscled grunting wankers makes me feel physically sick. Getting back to the point though - I went to the gym. So there I was, sweating away with the rest of the...

Sega Dreamcast In 1999, the season's to-die-for item was the Sega Dreamcast Console ($199). The chip inside this 128-bit system processed graphics four times faster than a Pentium II. After playing Resonance of Fate , I have no idea why you'd play such a beautiful game on a standard definition television. People did it with Dead Rising, and they all had beef with the text size. For most, it was unreadable in SD. If you saw my TGS preview of this lovely gun-heavy, acrobatic RPG, you'll know that it has plenty of selling points. But there are actually a few that the marketing guys...

Most gamers can remember the so-called console wars of the 16-bit generation. At the time, each of the console competitors used every advantage they could to show how their system was the right system to own. Along with graphics and other features, companies leveraged the coolness factor of their system's mascots. Nintendo had cemented Mario early on, while Sega finally got around to creating Sonic,...
