Bob Crow appearing on Have I Got News for You

RMT Leader Crow will be the first trade union official to ever appear on the comdedy quiz show " Have I Got News for You ". He'll be on this Friday and apparently is a long time fan. He said to the Evening Standard " I'm looking forward to an evening of sparring with Ian Hislop, Paul Merton and the rest of the panel. I've sat across the table from some sharp operators in my time, but...

What should be done with the PCC?

Critics call it a 'toothless watchdog' – and even its supporters admit it is the 'least worst option'. The Press Complaints Commission and its chair, Lady Buscombe, came under fire last week from MPs, lawyers, this paper's editor and bloggers. Is it time for a rethink? Geoffrey Robertson: 'The PCC's worst claim is that it has raised standards of journalism – it has not' The most satisfactory...

KHOODEELAAR! examining the role of the Daily Telegraph, “the pioneer paper on Mps’ fiddles” in shielding Crossrail scam-backer Boris Johnson

1618 [1545] GMT London Saturday 21 November 2009: Editor © Muhammad Haque. We have been asking why the Daily Telegraph won't publish a report by Celia Walden into Boris Johnson’s brain. The question arises from the ‘role’ the Daily Telegraph has played in the reporting of MPs’ expenses claims and other fiddles. And it also arises from what Celia Walden herself said –...

Katie Price: world inclusive

As The Independent on Sunday' s Katie Price correspondent (a post I secured because Alan Watkins was away that week), I draw readers' attention to another gem of postmodern media satire on the front cover of OK! magazine. The top headline is: Katie: "My only interview" I think this means: Katie: "My only interview in OK! magazine this week" But if Ian Hislop wants to report Richard...

Andrew Marr: The Making of Modern Britain, BBC2 Not Forgotten: Soldiers of Empire, Channel 4

You could forgive Andrew Marr and Ian Hislop buckling under the weight of their poppies come Armistice Day. How does a popular historian tackle a subject as relentlessly researched as the First World War without staggering into the No Man's Land between rehashed old facts and obscure military arcana? Hislop, on Channel 4, was at least able to beaver away in Marr's shadow. Poor Andy is a brand these...

More Important Than Miliband (Allegedly)

Watching Have I Got News For You last night, it was difficult not to feel sorry for Kevin Maguire, who managed to go through the whole programme without uttering more than three sentences. Difficult, but not impossible. The other highlight was seeing Ian Hislop looking very pleased with himself at being told he was 67 in GQ's list of the Top 100 Most Influential Men in Britain. He looked especially...

In At Number 66...

After yesterday's disappointment with the PCC ruling, today is another day, and a rather brighter one. I've just been flicking through the December issue of GQ Magazine and have been reading their list of the 100 Most Influential Men in Britain. It's an intriguing list, not least because for some reason best known to themselves they have included me at number 66 - one place above Ian Hislop, two above...

Hit & Run: Best job in the world?

In the "My Oxford" column of the new Oxford Today magazine, Ian Hislop is asked if he'd like to be a student again. "Oh yes," he replies, "and I've a major fantasy that, somewhere, there [is] a college so desperate that they will ask me to be Master." As job applications go, this has a touchingly scattergun quality: any college will do, as long as I get to be Master....

Toxic Gags

Had you ever heard of ‘super injunctions’? I confess I had not until I heard Ian Hislop talk about them on Have I Got News for You . In essence this is a gagging order that even prevents a newspaper saying that it has been gagged or making any kind of reference to the gagging device The issue arose when a ship belonging to an international oil trading company by the name of Trafigura deliberately...

Not Amused

For me, humour can overcome certain political views if it’s funny enough. The assumption that everyone will automatically agree is still irritating , but I can put that aside if there’s a good laugh in there. Did anyone see how miffed that Mark Steel fellow was when Ian Hislop called him a Stalinist on HIGNFY ? He was definitely bovvered. The thing I’m not so sure about is the stupid...
