Put a shouty man of a certain age in charge of something important enough for long enough – a nation at war; British domestic security; the F-Word kitchen – and before you know it, he's a national treasure. Or at least that's what seems to have happened to Winston Churchill, Harry out of Spooks, and Gordon Ramsay, who's from that special breed of middle-aged male broadcasters that everyone...
There was a public service announcement on BBC2 just now, right after The Thick Of It , saying how dangerous sparklers were, and that there were more safety tips on www.direct.gov.uk. Enjoy . My favourite is "Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them" . I mean, it's one or the other, isn't it? Or is it like "having your cake and eating it" ? I also liked "Light at arm's...
On the day back in May that it became clear the Glasgow North-east by-election was actually going to take place (yes, 'supremely confident' Labour have now been running from the constituency's voters for the same length of time there's left to go before the general election), I posted here to express my jitters. I was concerned at the past history of by-elections that had proved to be pivotal moments,...
If it's Saturday, it must be another feeble column from Amanda Platell in the Mail. What does she write about today? Sex education in schools ( covered in the Mail on 6 Nov ), Fern Britton doing a religious chat show on BBC ( covered in the Mail on 5 Nov ), Drew Barrymore in a frock ( covered in the Mail on 5 Nov ), the U2 Berlin concert ( covered in the Mail on 6 Nov ), an attack on Helen Goodman...
My 'Relentless' energy drink wasn't worth the purchase. Tuning into 'Later With Jools Holland' on BBC2 provided me with a another, more potent, alternative to the toxic blend of sugar and caffeine - noise. head-thumbing, noise. Listening to Jay-Z spurt self-glorifying, egotistic 'smack my bitch up' lyrics to a monotone baseline with no variation in rhythm or invention whatsoever, was like listening...
IN THE future, when people ask “So what sort of stuff should the BBC be spending our licence fee on'” I think I’ll say . . . Stuff like Into The Storm (BBC2, Monday).

A quick update on the Digital Switchover: In the Granada region, the Winter Hill transmitter (servings areas including Liverpool and Manchester) has just completed the first stage of the Switchover, with BBC2 analogue being switched off. The remainder of the analogue services will be switched off on the 2nd of December. This also affects around 70 relay transmitters. Freeview viewers served by Winter...
Dreamland is an animated Doctor Who story that will appear on CBBC, BBC Two, the red button on BBC One and the BBC Doctor Who website. Phew. That's a lot of places. It features David Tennant alone with new companion Cassie Rice (Georgia Moffett), and sees the TARDIS crew landing in Roswell. It'll be six parts in all, running for a total of 45 minutes. Pity it looks awful in just about every way. [...
Posted by Tom Murphy One of the lovely silly things about British TV is how much we love University Challenge. From the film Starter for 10 to this year's outbreak of Trimblemania, “Britain's poshest pub quiz” (as one of the participants in this documentary calls it) still exerts a hold, even after 47 years. This programme tracked down 10 of the 156 winning team members, from Francis Lambert...
When I was 16, I mainly thought about clothes and, probably, Dawson's Creek. Boys? Maybe. Friends? Probably. Sailing? Er, nope. Which may explain why I've only been on a boat a handful of times in my life, and Michael Perham has already sailed the world. The whole world. He did it aged 16, and became the youngest person ever to do so. The Schoolboy Who Sailed the World told his story.

Pretty much all of the major events of the 2009 season are now in the history books so this series is winding down. I'll keep going in a reduced format as long as there is something notable going on. Feature Events MotoGP - GP Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana - Circuit Ricardo Tormo - Valencia, Spain - (17/17) - www.motogp.com - 250cc (last ever), 125cc, etc Valencia is the traditional finale to...

Tree reflections in the lamp, the Cathedral Close, St Davids, Pembrokeshire, Wales (Can't you just imagine Mr Tumnus appearing through the trees and meeting Lucy') November The Weaver of Grass has celebrated Bonfire Night (aka as Guy Fawkes Night) with a wonderful blend of sunset photography and poetry....
The Bank of England's rate-setters have decided to pump an extra £25bn into the economy in their quantitative easing (QE) programme. The Bank has already spent £175bn on QE, which involves printing money to buy assets from banks and other companies to stimulate the economy. But despite all the many billions being spent, small businesses have seen a seventh consecutive month of reduced...
