Classic Bollywood: GHAR – Four Fab Songs

Ghar is what the Gulzar-RD Burman-Kishore magic is all about. I have always wondered whether this is a film one should watch because it shows the transition of Rekha as an actress or just listen to the music. I think I'll vote for the music.

N.R. Narayana "Boilerplate" Murthy

Over at Plus Ultra , Raj has been collecting "vacuous and verbose" stuff uttered by various people -- today's post , for example, catches Lata Mangeshkar holding forth on Sachin Tendulkar. When I saw N.R. Narayana Murthy's op-ed in The Hindu on Securing Indias Science Future , I thought it would be fun to go plus-ultra on Raj, and list the instances of largely meaning-free verbiage in it....

Honour Sachin with a ‘Vishwa Ratna: Lata Mangeshkar.

LATA: My heartiest congratulations to him. I have seen Sachin right from the time he made his debut as a sixteen-year-old. Since then, he has gone on to climb dizzy heights, he’s got married, raised a family, and somehow remained the same humble man throughout. It’s really amazing to know he has been around [...]

Delayed my shoots many times to watch Sachin bat: Amitabh Bachchan

Do not compare or put Sachin in the same class as me. May he continue to be with us, in our team, and be our inspiration forever. At a public function for the promotion of his film, Aamir Khan made a very pertinent remark. He said despite the fact that they know they are the [...]

Ravi: Ankhen (1968)

While I'm not usually a fan of Ravi, here is one of his I'm prepared to give a few spins. 'Ankhen' is a spy film I think... the score isn't exactly overflowing with the sound and feel of international espionage (whatever that is), but it does include two great Lata Mangeshkar songs; the sweet and tuneful 'Milti Hai Zindagi Men' and the atmospheric 'Gairon Pe Karam'. I keep coming back to both.'

Sadhna Sargam- True To Her Name

I remember having heard her for the first time in SaRe Ga Ma Pa. Her renderings were remarkably effortless and soul rendering. By the time she had finished, the audience was spell bound. As she sang, her higher octaves reminded you of the Queen of Melody Lata Mangeshkar In fact it was this comparison much earlier in [...]

Kalyanji Anandji: Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati (1968)

Pre-funk Kalyanji Anandji. And it's a keeper. There's not much for the sample-hungry beatheads on this one, simply a collection of great songs, for listening, mostly. Admittedly it's the (ubiquitous) jazzy cabaret number ('Hello Hello') that initially drew me to 'Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati' [review]; however Lata & Rafi's 'Jeevan Path Par' is an equal contender for best track. A lovely, melodious

Laxmikant Pyarelal: Man Mandir (1971)

I've mentioned earlier that Laxmikant Pyarelal scores from the early 70s (well, any era really) could go either way. A lot of them leave me cold, but here's one I like a lot. 'Man Mandir' has a full pot of good songs on offer, to pick and choose. Favourites? The lovely 'Ae Meri Ankhon Ke Pahle Sapne' (either version) and the the quirky 'Kahiye Ji Kya Loge'. But don't sleep on the rest; it's a
