Eric Burdon & War — Royal Albert Hall (4/21/2008)

A historic reunion captured here, featuring Eric Burdon and War together for the first time in over 30 years. An showcase featuring electrifying R&B, funk, Latin and jazz. With a distinctive sound that captured the heart and soul of 1970’s America, Los-Angeles based WAR played the music that made people dance and think. Their 1970 [...]

Food festival cuts 'Footloose'

There's a major bonus that goes with tons of food at this weekend's Taste of Blue Ash: Three nights of rock 'n' roll nostalgia with Kenny Loggins, War and Eddie Money.

Walleye Weekend washout

This weekend was Walleye Weekend in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, about an hour south of where we live. I’d hoped to go down Saturday night to hear a most unlikely double bill of the Grass Roots followed by War. However, that trip never materialized. My brother needed help moving, so I found myself in another part [...]

Eric Burdon Declares WAR Again

Monday 21 April saw the historic reunion of Eric Burdon and War for a very special night of electrifying R&B, funk, Latin and jazz. This was the first concert Eric Burdon and War had performed in 37 years since they originally disbanded in 1971. Originally the front man of the Animals, the legendary Eric Burdon is considered to be one of the greatest blues singers in the world. His contribution to...

Eric Burdon & War, Royal Albert Hall, London

The last time Eric Burdon & War played London, 38 years ago, they had a five-night residency at Ronnie Scott's and Jimi Hendrix jammed with them the day before he died. The former lead singer with The Animals and one of the most distinctive voices in rock, Burdon's move to the US in the late Sixties mirrored Hendrix's own relocation to the UK.

Eric Burdon is getting it back on with WAR

Eric Burdon and WAR are to play a one-off reunion gig next week in London (that'd be April 21st). Burdon, who you'll know from The Animals, joined US funkers WAR as singer for two LPs in '70. Neatly, this gig...

Midnight Tracker sampler, Vol. 4

Here’s a prime cut from tonight's offering over at The Midnight Tracker. Found earlier this week at the used record store: “Givin’ It Back,” a 1971 album of covers by the Isley Brothers. Here’s the Isleys’ funked-up, souled-up take on a tune that was a hit for Eric Burdon and War a year earlier. There’s plenty here to [...]

Eric Burdon Declares War Once Again

Eric Burdon is reuniting with War April 21 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Burdon has not performed with the group in 37 years, according to a press release. Both Burdon and the band maintain it will be a one-time concert. Burdon, originally the front man of The Animals, and Los Angeles-based War released two albums together in 1970--"Eric Burdon Declares War" and "The Black Man's Burdon." Shortly...

A second whirl of War

Eric Burdon and War haven't played together since 1971, which makes the news that's just been handed to us by pigeon - oh, alright, email - quite staggering. There's hasty reunions, and less rushed reunions, but a 37 year gap is proper spell to be away. And it's a proper, one-off, too: one date, at the Albert Hall , on April 21st, and then that's it. Probably until 2035, at least.

ERIC BURDON & WAR: Love is All Around

An odd collection of live tracks and what sound like cuts from the two Eric Burdon and War albums released at the turn of the '70s, 1976's LOVE IS ALL AROUND was probably a contractual obligation album. That said, it's a pretty terrific collection of long, loose War jams, which sound marvelous. Limber rhythms and dead-on horn and harmonica accents made this L.A. band one of the premier funk outfits...

THE ERIC BURDON BAND: Sun Secrets

Released without Eric Burdon's authorization, Sun Secrets is nothing for the singer to be ashamed of artistically. With approximately 24 minutes per side, Sun Secrets is a far cry from The Black Man's Burdon and the rhythms of the group War. As Mountain guitarist Leslie West would do a year after this when he formed the Leslie West Band, Burdon beats him to the punch with a self-titled group that...
