Sweeties, soulsters and some Philly jazz talents lead the CD release parade today. Whether your idea of soul music is Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd or Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson, you’d better do yourself a favor and get hip to the power of David Brinston, a.k.a. the Love Maker. A part of the underground soul circuit kept alive by labels like Malaco and Ecko, and artists like [...]

He’s the son of the former New Yorker editor William Shawn, and he’s become well known as a character actor in Hollywood movies such as The Princess Bride (1987) and Clueless (1995). [...]

I listened to the Soul Men soundtrackCD yesterday and it’s worth a listen – I loved it. What poignant moment I had when I heard late legend Isaac Hayes’ original recording of Stax Records “Never Say Goodbye.” I’d say ”Goodbye” is the best song on the soundtrack. As a whole the Soul Mensoundtrack is authentic soul music and [...]

It used to be that a list of albums offered up in December or January could paint a definitive, or at least representative, picture of The Year in Music. While that annual list is still a great way to say goodbye to the past year’s music and hello to what is to come, nowadays so many new albums and reissues vie for listeners that even a list of the best music from the past six months can seem quaintly...

Two legends in one weekend… this is heartbreaking. Soul legend Isaac Hayes passed away today at the age of 65 from an apparent heart attack. Hayes was one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records, where he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the [...]
