Folks, it is a great time to be a Beatles fan. More specifically, it is a great time to be a collector of Beatles memorabilia and those grey market recordings. Historical artifacts such as these seem to keep popping up all over the place. I certainly hope it eventually makes the rounds on the bootleg collecting [...]

One of my all time favourite songs is Sunny. There are many versions in existence - Stevie Wonder, Georgie Fame, Bobby Hebb and even James Brown and the Dee Felice Trio as featured on one of my earlier podcasts at some point within the last year. But here is really one of the finest and now very rare and unique versions of that song: Tom Jones and Ella Fitzgerald from a Tom Jones TV Special in 1970....

Emerging Artist Donating Percentage of CD Sales to Feed the Children and Self Help Africa As he readies himself for the July 22 release of his eponymous debut CD on Smooth Sounds Records, saxophonist Curtis Haywood is concretely putting his money where his heart is by donating a portion of his sales to two causes: Feed the Children and Self Help Africa...

As I listened to Swedish trumpeter Peter Asplund's quartet on As Knights Concur, I was reminded of another trumpeter somewhat closer to home. Whether consciously or not, Asplund channels Miles Davis' in his "transitional" phase shortly before Davis passed through the esoteric "door of fusion" into the sleep-inducing twilight zone that marked his later years as a jazz icon...

Our collection of quirky or otherwise interesting performances of Sonny (Bobby Hebb) is expanding. The Mexican movie Sin ton ni Sonia is a silly movie. Not as silly as Aaltra . But like Aaltra , it features its own unique version of Sonny ! It's actually called Sonia and it's in Spanish. We were very happy to find it on You Tube! Here is the full version (and a cropped one ), with fragments from the...

Dr. John's early work as a producer, sessionman, and songwriter for Ace Records is legendary, not only among fans of Mac Rebennack but among devotees of New Orleans R&B. Unfortunately, there was no easy way to hear this material until Music Club's 1999 release, Medical School: The Early Sessions of Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack. Clocking in at 18 tracks, the disc isn't complete, but it is definitive --...

Hebb’s soft voice is as warm and charming as it was on “Sunny” back in ‘66, and the tasteful arrangements are smoothly authentic.

It was 40 years ago, and the city of Memphis didn't want the band to play. At least that was the official stance the mayor and Board of Commissioners took in a unanimous resolution passed August 10, 1966, to express “official disapproval” and “advised The Beatles that they are not welcome in the City of [...]

Artwork by Colorbunch. There’s been a lot of hype surrounding the Cloverfield film that's to be released shortly. Obviously I haven't seen the flick yet, so I can't verify anything. But if you aren't planning on seeing it and are tired of overly-vague commercials, I ran across an illustrated digram of the Cloverfield monster. As [...]

The Blues Magoos, who started out as The Trenchcoats in The Bronx, NY, in 1964, were by 1965 denizens of the Greenwich Village scene, along with the likes of The Lovin' Spoonful, The Fugs and Mama Cass Elliott's pre-Mama's & The Papa's group The Mugwumps. At this time they were managed by Marvin Lagenoff...who supposedly had also managed Eydie Gorme earlier on...the man that had changed their moniker...
