Super Furry Animals

Interesting show at Nation, very little light to shoot the guys in on stage. Incidently, once the photographers had left the pit, all the stage lit up! Still fun gig and the crowd were well into it. Kinda nice to get some different stage shots and it kinda kicked the ol’ photography brain in to [...]

A new Ball game

Several years ago, 8 Ball was compared with early 1990s rave duo Altern-8 because of their penchant for wearing chemical warfare suits on stage. It was a shame: whatever spark the Dubliners had was muffled by their distracting apparel. Three years later, a shake-up has come just in time for 8 Ball’s second album, with nary a gimmicky costume in sight.

Pete Fowler

I just ordered a new vinyl figure from Welsh monster maestro Pete Fowler, who kindly replied with a nice e-mail thanking me for supporting his work over the years. I've been a big fan of his illustration style and great characters since his early work with the Super Furry Animals. If you've never seen his work or fantastic figures before check out his fantastic artwork at http://www.monsterism.net...

Idlewild leave me itching

…for more, obviously. They also left me itching in a very literal sense. What is it with ageing indie fans? Are they immune to the charms of hygiene? Despite their infestations, they all had girlfriends/boyfriends too. Grrrr. Revolting, isn't it? I got home and nearly burned all my clothes before spending an hour in the bath frantically scrubbing away in case the critters survived the journey...

Cate Le Bon

The Terror of the Man Ever since St. Vincent checked in with her brilliant debut album Marry Me in 2007 I’ve been on the look out for a female songwriter burning the same desirable flame. Finally I’ve found her; she is Welsh musician Cate Le Bon and her debut album Me Oh My is the [...]

cate le bon: me oh my (2009)

Cate Le Bon Me Oh My ••••• Irony Bored Cate Le Bon is the latest musical export from deepest, darkest Wales. Well, Cardiff anyway. Despite some attention gained from last year’s Welsh-language EP, Edrych Yn Llygaid Ceffyl Benthyg, and a self-released single, she remains relatively unknown across the border. Now, with a little help from her friends, that [...]

Birds & Batteries – Tuesday, October 27th @ The WoodsOur fearless leader wrote a small profile of this California-based band (pictured) back in May when they were gearing up to play Doug Fir. It’s Friday!

Let’s review the week: - I’ve been pretty quiet for the most part. It took a picture of a penis museum to get me yapping again. If you ever meet me, and you see that I’m in a bad mood, now you know how to cheer me up! - My general silence did not affect the blog, [...]

So. Were the Super Furry Animals actually any good?

I've seen them 12-15 times over the past fifteen years. You never know whether you'll get the Rock Super Furry Animals, the Hippy Super Furry Animals, the Nosebleed Techno Super Furry Animals or something else. This time, we got a cool, relaxed, friendly amalgam of all three. Most shockingly, we got the Beardy, Blues, Fleet Foxes version - under the synths and lasers were blues riffs and gentle harmonies....
