Album: The Phoenix Foundation, Happy Ending (Phoenix Foundation)

Led by oddball singer/songwriter Samuel Flynn Scott, Wellington sextet the Phoenix Foundation are surely the most potent band to come out of New Zealand since the far-off days of the Chills.

Coda # 1: Some thoughts on Music and the Law

At the moment I am spending some time on a new blogging project. This one will be done under the aegis of my employer, and therefore won't necessarily be a distraction from work (the main reason I had to give up doing this one on a regular basis). I have drafted a few pieces which for various reasons I decided I didn't want to post on the new blog, so they are finding a home here. The first concerns...

Sunday Music – A Whiter Shade Of Pale

Today’s music video is ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ from Procol Harum. This video was posted to You Tube by gazsmash There is an old adage that goes, ‘If you can remember the 60’s, you weren’t there.’ For all those people who do remember the 60’s then this song is part of the fabric of those memories. This [...]

Alton Ellis – A Whiter Shade Of Pale

During the 70s, Jamaica’s music industry had no international copyright agreements, which meant anyone could cover a song “legally” and not have to pay royalties to the original artist. This helped push the popularity of Reggae, internationally and at home, and gave us hundreds of classics with a Jamaican slant, like this cover of Procol Harum’s [...]

Weekend Listomania (Special Soupy Sales 1926-2009 Edition)

[ Gentle readers, a very great man has died. All of us here at PowerPop extend our sincere condolences to his family, in particular to his rock star sons Hunt and Tony Sales and, of course, to hero of Steve's youth, the unforgettable Pookie the Lion . Please observe a moment of silence, and when it's over, Soupy will send you a postcard from Puerto Rico. We now resume our regular programming. ] Well,...

Procol Harum: Wreck of the Hesperus - Issa's Sunday Service, #25

Keith Reid 2nd from right As long-time reader's of The Hut know, Keith Reid , the lyricist for the great artrock band, Procol Harum , is one of my favorite little known songwriters. Reid, like Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead, is a default member of the band and, since neither plays an instrument in performance, both suffer from a deplorable lack of recognition. I've written about the Reid and the...

Sympathy For The Symphony

The Beach Boys So in January The Beach Boys are coming to town for three performances - with The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Well sort of, Mike Love will be the only original member with veteran BB sideman Bruce Johnston and a bunch of new blokes making up the rest of the franchise. This line-up is one of three current touring units of ex-Beach Boys that also includes Brian Wilson solo and Al Jardine...

The Friday Mixtape: 10/2/09

The important thing to remember is that I didn’t set out to make this mix as it is. The initial concept was to pull out the box of CDs I seldom listen to and pull tracks from them. It is not a judgment call as to why the Beasties’ Hello Nasty is down there on the [...]

Michael English: Graphic artist

On Friday nights at midnight in 1967 an Irish dance hall on the Tottenham Court Road was transformed into a drug-fuelled rock club called UFO (which stood for Underground Freak Out rather than unidentified flying objects). The promotional artwork and surreal advertising posters for the club caused a sensation. They were created by a witty, clever 25-year-old artist, Michael English.

The Ironies Abound

From 1973, and his quite wonderful first solo album, please enjoy "Going for a Song," Procol Harum organist Matthew Fisher 's melodically charming and hilarious kiss-off to his ex-bandmates (and to a certain hit record he would later sue to gain authorship of). It's not that I dislike the words Though I must admit there are better words around But every time I hear that tune It really brings...

Blues and the G20 connection

Well, there really isn't any connection, but with that in the headline, I figured I'd get a few new BlueNotes readers. Meanwhile, there are a couple special shows coming up this weekend that I want to mention. Tomorrow night (9/25), rock guitarist Robin Trower (I'm sure you all remember Procol Harum !) plays the Palace Theater in Greensburg. If you're going, make sure you get there for the opening...
